If your hospital, cancer cener, or what-ever has a colorectal support group, I would encouragee you to join it. I didn"t discover this group untill I was NED two years out, Those newly dxed with colon cancer need to hear our stories. They still think cancer is a death
Projection. By meeting with them and describing their future, they can realize that cancer can be beat--no matter how rocky the road.
Join a group and help our fellow cancerites!!!!!

    I believe you are correct
I have not yet done so for the rectal cancer... there is a new group forming at my hospital this month..
I do belong to a colostomy group and it was wonderful to see people with colostomies 20 and 30 years out.. not cancer caused though so i am unique in that group and many years younger than most of them..
I do attend a thyroid group and I am the oldtimer there.. but thyroid cancer is the one cancer everyone thinks they are cured from and don't have to worry about every again.. as unfortunately that is how the docs' describe it.. the follow up for that cancer is so mental I find is so stressfull and yet people who are new to it think they have it licked.. I think I have outgrown that group .. the fact that my rectal cancer may have been brought on by the treatment of the thyroid cancer is even too much for me.. never mind any of those happier than pigs in ***t people who attend that meeting.. I have become jaded I guess...
But i do believe to spread word that cancer is not a death sentence I do that evey where I go.. I don't hide my cancer.. I am alive.. and I let people know that.. and they always say to me "You have cancer?" and I have to say YES and they are dumbfounded..

    Yup
I've tried to go to groups around my area but they are always later in the evening like 7:00 p.m. and that is when my system starts to be active so attending was never an option. Glad that it has helped you and wish it was more available to others. Thanks for the info.

    late meetings
That's the same as here, Annabelle. By late afternoon or early evening, I'm wiped out and all I want to do is stay in bed and watch TV. Going to a meeting that late just isn't an option.

    Agreed...
While being on this site is helpful for myself as well as others, meeting face to face is great too if you can swing it. I went to Gilda's Club for a while as well as a group at a hospital. I believe STRONGLY that all of us have a responsibility to help others who are in a similar situation.

Many who get through this don't look back and stop coming here. Of course everyone can do what they want, but I believe their presence would help others who are fighting cancer. Some want to forget cancer ever happened, there's no way I could do that. It happened.
If my experience can help others then I feel I need to remain accessible to help others...
    It's just how I am I supposed...
