BEAM

in Lymphoma (Hodgkin and Non-Hodgkin) #1
I am scheduled for a BMT but will first need 6 days of BEAM to kill my bone marrow. If anyone has had this type of chemo, can you tell me how it made you feel? I am a little nervous about having it from what I have heard and read, so I would like to hear from someone who has gone through it... Thank you

    I don't have experience with this but wanted you to know we're listening out here :).
    I'm sure someone will respond soon. There are members here who have had stem cell transplants (bone marrow transplants) and hopefully they can chime in.

    Tammie - I don't know what this is either, and I had to look it up. You might find this of interest, it's from another lymphoma online support group, and there are a lot of people posting who've had this treatment:

    All the best to you - BTW, the 5 year survival rate after BEAM treatment looks pretty good, so definitely worth it!

    I had an SCT last June and did the BEAM chemo. I won't lie, it wasn't fun or easy. I think the hardest part for me was the loss of control with going to the bathroom. It was quite awhile before I could do just one or the other.......it was like slush. Sorry to be graphic, but it was what it was.

    Best advise I can give you, is get lots of rest and keep trying to eat. Use the magic mouthwash before eating and stay hydrated. Stay out of the sun and exercise.

    My dad just had this sct in April. He was in the hospital for 22days. It took while to get his numbers to go up. It is much harder than his other treatments. First he had 6 treatments of rchop and then 3 treatments of rice. He didn't,t really lose any weight until the sct. He started at 210lb. And now he weighs 180lbs. He didn't get any mouth sores. He lost his appetite and he said the texture of food is different. He got skin rashes. His stomach is bothering him. He is extremely tired. Has to take naps. I know this isn't probably what you want to hear but I,m just being honest. It did seem to help though. He had a bad pain in his side and after the second day it went away. He will get a pet scan soon to see if it helped.
