Aquaphor as a moisturizer?

My doc recomended aquaphor as moisurizer but i find it way too greasy, do we need such a greasy stuff?

I read thru many many blogs but this whole issue about proper moisurizing is confusing to me.

It would be great if you could share how did moisturize i.e. Which moisusrizer, how many times did u apply, how much etc.

Thanks,
Sam

Aquaphor is like vasoline to me.......
I use it lightly........but for my main cream, I'm using Calendula cream (recommended by the NA in radiation).......I bought the kind for babies...It too is thick, but seems to sink into the skin better. It's a natural healer. You can get it at any Health Food Store.

    Aquaphor
Back in the old days of 09 (!) the only thing my rad Dr advised to use was Aquaphor. Figure you need something more than just something to "moisturize" your skin, Sam. I was under the impression that Aquaphor has medicinal properties, also, and that's why I was advised to use it. Might be something better, now, but back in the old days...

    Phrannie,
    I just looked up

    Phrannie,

I just looked up calendula cream, that seems much better. I will get that. It seems the place u are having treatment are very kowledgeble. I am with memorial loan kettering which you would think will be very good but when it comes to things like this, they dont have much info.

    Thanks,

My Dr doesn't want me using
My Dr doesn't want me using anything except Aloe Vera. It's interesting to see all the different opinions out there!:)

As you know I do a lot of alternative products to stay away from
Medications when I can. The stuff I used on my neck throughout
Treatment was "Transfer Factor Renewall", my neck is just fine apart
From the discoloration there is no soreness, no cracking, no peeling
It is part of the product line that I have mentioned many times on
    The board.

    God bless

    Aquaphor
My techs were quite insistent that I get approval for whatever cream I was going to use on my rad burned neck. And like most of you, it was Aquaphor and Aloe Vera that they said to use.

I did get approval for Cortizone 10 with cooling gel, that anti-itching cream you see on TV. The cooling part is Aloe. As my neck started to heal, the itching drove me nuts so that cream really helped. Almost every one I used burned a little bit except the Aquaphor. And yes, Vaseline is its main ingredient. Even though it was messy, it was the only one that felt good. My pillow cover looked awful the next morning!

    Didn't Like Aquaphor..
Way to thick and greasy for me also....

I did use vaseline intensive care and water basically, thinning it out.

Of course they advise you not use any prior to or during the rads session....

But my neck burns were never really more than a bad sun burn with some discolored skin and peeling.

    I should take out stock
in aquaphor! It is the only thing so far that will moisten my lips (for a short period of time). First time around, Aloe didn't do anything for me, I stuck with the aquaphor. Just when I was starting to be able to use a shea butter lip balm I had a recurrance. I used Maderma (given to me by rad techs) and aquaphor. I still use aquaphor for my lips and BioOil (OTC) for my neck a few times a week. My neck seems to feel dry, as well as my left ear so every few nights I slather on the oil on my neck.

    Aloe vera
I am a big fan of Aloe vera. My doc was hesitant but said okay to use it. I put fresh aloe vera (i buy it from a local farmer's market right after my treatment and than come home and put aquaphor which i find very greay speccially with temps going up here in NJ.

Megab and Osmotar, which aloe vera product are you using?

Tonsil dad, i looked up what you recommended and will chek with my doc. Did you get it approved by your doc?

Clendula cream suggested by Phrannie looks good too.

I wish they make a list from which we could choose. This is such a simple thing but causes such confusion.

    Aloe Vera
LOL, I tried aloe vera... I remember I had a bunch of friends gave me some for the burns and peeling (the actual plant).

I stuck some of the leaf parts in the frige and the cool gel felt great when I first put it on.

But that night was the first time my temperature spiked to 102.7. Scared the crap out of me...I thought for sure it was some reaction to the aloe vera.

Eventually we figured out it was the amifostine finally catching up to me around day 32.

I never tried the aloe vera again, LOL....

    No problem.
Hi Sam, I shown my Onc the TF+ and she looked at the formula and said it was ok
to take that it wouldn't interfere with anything and that it was good to keep
    the immune system tip top.

Also check out this website www.alternative-cancer.net/78_alternative.htm

You see some very interesting things also its in alphabetical order so look
at the TF+ it has a good write up.

Anyway feel free to contact me.

    God bless
    Tonsil Dad,

Hey...I just found what I used on my burned neck ...
Okay...I will just have to have my daughter read me the lable (don't laugh ..I'm old I guess) it was a prescription and I worked wonders for me (really took the pain out) ...

Here is what the lable reads...

    Dr. Reddy's
    For topical use only:
    SSD
    1% Silver Sulfadiazine Cream

This was a cream that was sooooooo soothing ....I would put this on then I would put this "bandages" on that looked like skin grafts (for lack of a better word) and then on top of that I would put guaze ....

    I hope that helps!

    Aloe
I used Fruit of the Earth, purchased at Walmart, 100% gel. Like Skiffin I had a little burn on my neck almost like a mild sunburn, this aloe kept the skin from feeling/looking dry.

    Tim,

The stuff you used is usually prescribed for sever burns.... It is prescribed for burn patients, but also I have seen some of the people here with the severe radiation burns have it prescribed also...good stuff from what I hear.

Dang ...I did not know I was that burned... :)
John ....hmmm....the doc did not say I was "that" burned....lol...I guess I must have been. I read you post and went back and looked at the pictures I took of my neck...yikes....I think I was burned badly. We had to stop treatments for almost a week due to the burns. And then another time 4 days due to the burns....

Now I feel like I was a bad patient ......the doc must have bee glad to get me outta there :) (just kidding).
