thickness of saliva
February I was diagnosed npc. stage 2. would you believe today is my last chemo treatment? and I still have 8 treatmnents left on rad.
AM in critical stage treatment and hoping for suggestion (never mind the pain we know is soo painful.)
What will I do with thickness of saliva? it feel like is choking me specially when ever I go to my Rad treatment.
How can I ease the pain? I take my morphin for pain it helps some but the pain in the throat does'nt ease up. I don't eat anymore, I feed myself thru the Gtube. I want to eat so badly..
Anyone can give me input I'll appreciate them. Sorry for all the misspell as I said am on lots of painkiller.

Meds & Rinses...
Welcome Chimay...
About the only recommendation that I can offer up is maybe a rinse to help with the phlegm. My self I rinsed frequently with a combination of hydrogen peroxide and baking soda in a small glass of water.
Others have mentioned varietys of similar....
As for pain, if the meds aren't working communicate with your MD's to find something that will...no need to suffer if there's something out there.
I know some have used the fentanyl patches... I tried the roxanol liquid morphine, but it didn't do much for me.
I mainly just used ground up percocet, hydrocodone or oxicotin.
But I was lucky, I didn't really have much pain.
Best,

I am 2 years post treatment but remember the mucous like it was yesterday. I went through a box of tissues a day spitting all that crap out.
I finally got a suction machine prescribed by my Dr. It was the savior for me, I sucked all that crap out and I found I could finally sleep for 2 hours, wake up and suction, then go back to sleep.
I highly recommend you ask your Dr for a suction machine, worked wonders for me. On a high note, it does end. My mucous dried up about 6 weeks after treatment ended, but it was thick for quite awhile. I feel your pain. Try the machine.
All the best,

Hi Chimay ...
My mucous / saliva was so awful too ...sorry you have to go through it ....
Can't add much to what John and Steve said, but Gingerale worked good for me.....
As for the pain, be sure and let your doctor know if the pain is too high ...I used fentynal patches as well as took Narco AND took 5 advil every 5-6 hours ....
It's terrible to go through ...but it will end, and that's the best news I can give you.
Best to you,

What size was your machine? I recently got one and it is a bit smaller than a regular tool box. I was hoping for something the size of a waterpic.0 -

Mine was small, with a reservoir for catching all the saliva. Maybe the size of a small toolbox, but it worked great. Remember you have to close your mouth around the wand to get it to suction anything....It took me a day or two to get used to it....But again, it worked great. Hope yours helps you...0
