Laughter is good
You earned a Gold Star for giving others a laugh on a tough day for you all.
Seems like the chemo centers should offer TV turned to all the old belly laughter shows. Couldn't hurt to have a good diversion.0 -

What wrong with a plate full a spinach.
Yum.
At least I bet it was cooked, now a plate full of raw spinach, well that's a challenge.

Ah Yes...
The elevator ride. it's like everyone's going for a root canal or something. Usually there's an awkward silence on the ride. I go to Sloan Kettering in NYC and there's 11 floors, sometimes it's the local one and it takes forever to get there.
Often I can tell who is new and who's done this many times.
I believe we need to keep a sense of humor whenever we can about it all.

Hi Phil, Just curious, wouldn't happen to know a Dr. Yu? He was my onc. in univ. of pa. and was asked to join Sloan.
The first time i got off the elevator and saw the big cancer center sign, i bust out crying. It came from no where. The nurse said here's a tissue, but it'll cost you a quarter. I started to look in my purse, tears streaming and she looked at me like i was crazy. "Just joking sweety", goes to show how serious i was taking this.

Aww c'mon Pete, spinach salad is just about the only green salad that I like (except for a good Caesar salad maybe.)0 -
humor, what a concept
When I started radiation therapy I got several pair of boxer shorts to wear in for treatment. My favorite two were given to me by a lady friend. One was black with red hearts the said "I'm too sexy for my shorts" (I'm actually wearing that pair right now.) The other were a pair of women's boxers that are pink and have little piggies holding hearts all over it. The radiation team always got a chuckle when they saw those. I went in for treatment one day, pretending to be angry and said "this stuff isn't working! All of this radiation and I'm not getting super powers yet! My neighbors thought I was crazy when I tried to climb the apartment building wall yesterday!"
My last day of radiation, I was wearing my pink pig shorts, but I'd had my best friend come over and she used a Sharpie to write a special message. When I went in for that treatment, I told them that I had a special message for them and that they had to read it for themselves. Then I pulled down the boxers as usual and they read in all caps "The Toxic Tushie: This vent has been known to release toxic radioactive gases, contents under pressure, stand back 300 feet!" I could actually hear them laughing during the whole treatment and it did my heart a lot of good.0 -

try to find some Laurel And Hardy films My favotite has Hardy at a consttuction site Hold ing a bucket of nails on a pully. Upon turning the rope to Stan -the nailare heavier than Stan and he goes up as the nails come down. But the bottom of the keg releases the nails. Now Stan is heavier than the bottomless keg so he comes down and the keg goes up. Upon hitting the groung Stan releases the rope, so the
keg comes down on top of him. Watching it is more fun than reading about it. Buster Keaton had many sight gags as well. see if you can find the. We have to laugh or else we would cry. GGood luck to you.0 -

Love you post Jayhawk!
thanks for your post.
I love your quick note and thanks so much for sharing.
keep up the laughter and let everyone wonder what you're thinking!!!
I went into the waiting room one day, and looked at about 6 people waiting for thier chemo treatments... and I looked at each of them, with my sunglasses on because my eyes burn so bad some mornings from the sunlight... and asked...
"who's ready to dance at this chemo bar and enjoy some fresh chemo cocktails?"
not too many laughs as they were all too serious and didn't expect anyone to say anything.
i felt like an idiot for a few seconds... but once i sat down, all 7 of us (plus our caregivers) were in conversation about various things. It made people talk that were not talking which was pretty cool.
ya never know how you will affect people in a positive way.
keep up the laughs and i wish you the best in your treatments.
cheers

humor making "civilians" uncomfortable...
I'm kind of a joker around the office and I've always liked to laugh. We take turns volunteering to deliver Meals on Wheels and we were discussing the new schedule. I just mentioned, jokingly, that I started doing this so I'd have another item for my obituary. Heck, I'd said the same thing before cancer, but this time you could have heard a pin drop, which kind of surprised me. But I also know that I'm now the guy that nobody really knows what to say to. Anyway, I broke the uncomfortable silence with "I told you people I'm gonna joke my way through this," and then they felt comfortable to laugh, at least for my benefit. I'm going to continue to "zing" them once in awhile, just so they know that I'm comfortable talking about it, and, like I said, I'm going to laugh my way through this (as long as I can).0
