One Year Cancer Free

One year cancer free today. It's has been one year since my radical nephrectomy and I'm happy to report that I'm cancer free. I remember sitting in my kitchen by myself signing on to this site while my family slept in their rooms alittle over a year ago. I never felt so alone. I posted a short message not really expecting much to come of it. I checked back an hour or so later and Iceman had responded. It was a caring voice from beyond . He let me know that I was not alone and told me that I would alright. I needed to hear that from someone who had been through it and, not just a well meaning relative or a doctor. . Since that night I've talked to other surviors and they have been a great help. I've recently been involve with my new battle Chronic Kidney Disease and I find myself at the end of stage 4 and getting ready for diaylsis. Life is hard sometimes ,but thank God for those who have been where you are and take time to reach back and guiding you through. To all of you thank you and keep up the good work and God bless you all.

    Darryl, I wish I'd read this post of yours before welcoming you back on another thread. We'll all be sorry to hear that you have another battle on, but you've won a great victory already and have the mindset to take on the new challenge.

    I remember that you had a very low eGFR (even for an Afro-American) that looked like probably giving trouble. Just as iceman's was the first friendly voice you heard here and it proved of such help, you might well hear from him again pretty soon because he knows plenty about CKD and will doubtless be ready to give any help that he can. In any event, it's evident you've been in good hands. All the very best with whatever life brings, TW.

    So glad to hear you are cancer free! Hard to believe how quickly time passes. Dialysis is but other bump in the road. One of my aunts had dialysis three times a week for many, many years. She was the feistiest woman I ever knew. It never slowed her down! You will sail through this also.

    Time flies really are a pest aren't they? You're right about how quickly time passes and I've been shocked to see how you've changed!

    What's the news on the job front Rae? Are you feeling settled? Good news about Nancy, heh? (esp. good news for sarcomatoids!)

    You're right that Darryl has what it takes to make the best of things, whatever his course is from here on.

    I'm still schleppin' along at the same job - I had two interviews and it was between me and one other - I didn't get the job. But I figure there is something else out there for me eventually. I'm personally still struggling with sciatic pain from the dumb crutches - just finished my sixth week of physical therapy! I must say I have really enjoyed the heat packs and massages, however ;)

    My mom, who is just 69 years young, bless her heart, is entering her final stages of Lewy Body disease. We are not sure how much longer she has (though Mom is a fighter) so needless to say I am devoting much of my time with her. :)

    That is my wonderful little buddy, Tootie - my English Bulldog. She was in dire need of a cup of coffee! She's not a morning person (rather, dog)!

    Wonderful news about Nancy! It's great to pop in here and see how well everyone is doing, despite their circumstances. This is such a positive, happy site - hard to believe it's a cancer forum!

    You're right about this site Rae. Thanks for the update. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you on the job front and for your Mom.

    On the sciatica, have you tried an electric seat massager? I picked one up out of curiosity after a friend (3 years NED from RCC) mentioned that he got a lot of relief from terrible sciatica. He's a giant with a long back and I can't even begin to guess his body-weight and he suffers really badly at times. It's evidently been a godsend for him. I don't really have a problem other than occasional lower backache but on the occasions I've used it it has been pleasant. It's just a shaped pad that fits into the seat and back of a chair and plugs into the mains. You just sit on it and switch it on. There are nodes which vibrate to massage various areas of your back, buttocks and thighs and a variety of different programs, plus a separate warming element.

    Good to hear from you. Your Kidney failure numbers should be a signal to all of our fellow members to get a check up with a Nephrologist post surgery as the Urologists and Surgeons seem to be to focused on recurrance issues only. My Nephrologist tells me that poor Kidney function can not only lead to dialysis, but is more likely to lead to heart issues. I know that you are aware of this I am just trying to raise awareness among our fellow members. May you start counting your survivorship in years now that the first has past.

    Hi TW and thanks for the greeting. Didn't mean to be gone for so long but I've been trying to wrap my mind around this new disease CKD . Also I have been spending alot of the Davita.com website . My GFR is currently at 16 and my nephrologist has refered me to a surgeon for catheter placement. Enough about me . Hope all is well with you . Keep posting

    Dialysis
    Stay positive Darryl. I may need you in the future. Both my sister and mom had been on dialysis. they never had cancer. But if I'm like them at all, then dialysis is next. However my GFR has been over 60. So.....who knows?
