Ultrasound question

in Ovarian Cancer #1
Anyone know how common it is to have an ultrasound report that states "all ovarian ca is not ruled out by ultrasound?" Also is a complex solid mass of 4.3 cm on the ovary concerning in someone who is 52? Thanks

    Y-E-S!!! a solid complex mass on the ovary in someone your age is MOST concerning. All ovarian ca is not ruled out is a term used by radiolgists to protect them in case they missed something. I had almost the exact same thing. My ultrasound was inconclusive but another radiologist picked up on it and had me come back while she was in the room. After 45 minutes they found a solid complex mass, smaller than yours in left ovary. They did a CA-125, have you had one yet? Blood test . Mine was slightly elevated. You need one done. Next thing I knew I was in surgery. Diagnosis....... Stage 1A, tumor grade 3 clear cell. (I have a sneaky bad kind). Doing chemo now and through out this summer.
    I hope I have not come on too strong, but I know how many women just get blown off and not followed. So Please, please, if they are not following up on this, be your own advocate. Ask for that blood test and talk with your Dr about going ahead with surgery,just to be sure. My Dr said we should not have these things on our ovaries at our age anymore. Praying for you that it will be nothing and the surgery will be precautionary, which it could be nothing. But at this point better safe than sorry. Please keep me updated. HUGS

    My gyno is very thorough and she wants to do a D&C and diagnostic laparoscopy - it's scheduled for 4/19/12. Haven't had the CA-125 but am being followed by an oncologist for appendix cancer and have had CT scan and CEA and CA19-9 tests done. These last happened on 2/3/12 and were normal. Ultrasound was on 3/15/12 - is it possible something could grow this fast (in 6 weeks) or not be detected by CT scan? Maybe this is all just benign...

    good so good to hear they are doing a lap and D&C Maybe it is just benign,but no way to know except for microscope. So are you saying you have already battled appendix cancer??? Did I read that right? I will be thinking about you. Let us know how the surgery goes.

    See a Gynecologic-Oncologist ASAP!
    I was blown off by 2 gyns, both of whom did vaginal ultrasounds and both of whom thought they were seeing degenerating fibroid, in spite of my being 63,the average age for OVC diagnosis, and in spite of the mass having grown very quickly. Neither of the morons suggested testing my CA-125. Ultrasounds are not definitive for cancer!

    A good gyn/onc will order a CAT scan with IV and oral contrast. That should be done before any surgery anyway. I do not want to scare you, but if it is OVC, you need to have surgery by a gyn/onc and no one else. I was diagnosed with stage 1C, grade 3, mixed cell types, including clear cell.

    I see an oncologist every 6
    I see an oncologist every 6 months for follow-up, CT scan with contrast, and tumor marker tests. My last CT scan 6 weeks before the ultrasound was clear. Since my biggest concern is that this has spread from my appendix cancer, I have been talking to several appendix cancer specialists - one at MD Anderson. I'm feeling better now after talking with them and if they feel more should be done or the treatment plan should be different, then I'll do what I have to. Trouble is, I've found, you have your drs that know gastrointestinal cancers and drs that know gynecologic cancers but seems to be hard to find one that knows all of them. Since appendix cancer is so rare, there are only a few experts in this area, but, at some point, you have to trust someone... Thanks for the concerns - it's much appreciated.
