Question for any Experts

Been reading this board the last few days and got some great advice. I bought the book Three Months to Life earlier today.

My Dad is in his late 70s and back in 2008 they removed a Kidney. He was on Sutent during 2009 and stopped in 2010. Everything seemed great until January 2011 when it spread to bones and a section where the old kidney was. Radiation in his leg and a rod was placed there back in September 2011. Put on Nexavar.

Got word a few days ago (March 2012) that there are spots in lung and liver. Small but three spots in each. Now moving him to Affinitor.

I see a PFS of about 4.5 months on Affinitor. Are there any other drugs after Affinitor- is this the last defense?

Hopefully the book "Three Months to Life" will help with non-drug success.

Thanks. Jacko.

    Doctors are the experts
No, this is not the last line of defense. The individual is the last line of defense.
There are other medicines like Votrient, Everolimus, and newly approved Axitinib. You also have complimentary and alternate routes to try.
I think you should also consult with a doctor about High dose Interlukin.
I am not a doctor, and certainly no expert.
Please meet someone at MD Anderson, or Sloan, or even Fox chase.
    Raj.

    Future treatment
Jacko, that's a useful reply from Raj (although it may be rather late for Il2 to be an option?) Getting 3 months to Life makes good sense. It sounds as though your Dad has been sensibly looked after and I would bet that he goes a long way past the median PFS you've mentioned.

Why was the Sutent stopped? Would it have been possible to go back on it or was that door closed? There are several new drugs in the pipeline to come after Axitinib so it's reasonable to hope for a while longer for your Dad and complementary therapies will help to extend the horizon even further.

New drugs. I hope someone else will answer your question angec
Right now I'm in a hospital bed after a second op yesterday and not really switched on - my morphine pump has run dry and for technical reasons they're needing to consult an anaesthesiologist before getting it going again so I'm a bit distracted!!
Theoretically, one possibility is to try another round of Sutemt if your Dad could take it.

    Yes Jacko
There are. Also it"s not a foregone conclusion that he can't benefit from another course of a drug which had stopped working for him.

I would strongly recommend that he listens daily to the CD that goes with "3 Months to Life". Do you have that? If not, do buy it - you can get it from Jerry White on his MAARS website.
