Anyone had Laparascopic Partial Nephrectomy?
It seems everyone that does partial nephrectomy do it open stomach, and anyone doing it Laparscopic does a radical nephrectomy, and not just partial.

A little insight
In my day 9 years ago they were not doing partials. My 4.2cm little rascal as well as my left kidney was removed Laproscopically. If it had been larger or the procedure was more difficult it would have been done with an open cut. Partials are now done to preserve kidney function where possible. A partial is a longer more difficult surgery as they cut and redo the kidney rather than just remove it. This added difficulty for a partial makes it more difficult to do laproscopically. That being said others may have an answer to your question as to whether in some circumstances a partial can be done laproscopically.
On the good side I get a free t shirt this Saturday at a local Relay for Life event as well as a free Survivors' lunch. I paid my dues for both. It is amazing what we do for a free t shirt. but the choice was not up to me and I intend to make the best of it for the next 20 or thirty years. I will be 68 in 2 months and am already near the last one quarter of my life.0 -

Hi, VeryAnxious,
I did robotic too. How big was your resection ? Margin of the resection was negative or positive? Mine was positive and is worried about the result.0 -

The overall 10-year probability of freedom from local disease recurrence was 93% (95% CI 89, 95), and from metastatic progression 93% (95% CI 90, 95), with no significant difference between patients with positive vs. negative margins (p=0.97 and 0.18, respectively). PSMs were not associated with an increased risk of local recurrence or metastatic disease.

I will be having a partial robotic in two weeks. Mine is also small - 2.9. I would greatly appreciate it if you can tell me all about your experience with the operation. Mine is on the lower pole of the right kidney. Please reply if you can.0 -

I just posted a request to VeryAnxious. I would also like to know your experience with the partial robotic procedures. I, too, am anxious due to the information I have read - for instance, there is only a 30 minute warm ischemic (sp?) time to get the tumor out and close the kidney before starting the flow of blood back into the kidney, otherwise damage to the kidney will occur. I have asked my doctor the possibility of a radical, but he thinks the partial will be okay. Please let me know how you felt after the surgery, how long the recovery was, and how many days of 'hard' pain you experienced. I just want to be prepared as my surgery is 200 miles away and the doctor stated that I would be up walking after the surgery and I would go home the next day. I am reading on this log that many people, no matter what type of nephrectomy, stayed 3 days on average. I guess I need to know because I need to make hotel reservations for my fiance who it going with me and I need to make sure I reserve enough time at the hotel and I need to make sure he requests enough time off from work. Thanks.0 -

Hi j_rod,
I'm sure you have seen my previous posts re: my (successful) partial nephrecotmy with Da Vinci surgery (see 'Wish I Were The Last Newbie On This Board'), so I won't repeat them here, but if you really have to leave the hospital the next day, I would strongly recommend that you stay nearby. I am very fit and athletic, but couldn't even walk at all until 48 hours after surgery. By day 3 I started to feel much stronger, but I don't think I could have withstood a 200 mile car ride. Also, if anything happens in that early period you want the hospital to be accessible to you. Hope this helps.0 -

Sorry guys, surgery this afternoon seems to have given me a stutter! Also this isn't the thread I repeatedly posted it on - the CSN system seems to have gone screwball.0
