Port Removal
Congratulations on your upcoming deportation! I had mine for about 6 months when I had it removed. It was easiest of the many procedures, surgeries, etc. that I had. I drove myself to my general surgeon's office. He numbed the area around the port with a local anesthetic - lidocaine I believe. I closed my eyes and he made perhaps a 2-inch incision just above the port and took it out. All I could feel was a tugging sensation. There were 2 or 3 dissolvable stitches. It took about 15 minutes from start to finish. No pain meds required and I drove myself home. That's all there is to it. It is more difficult to put it in than to take it out. Good luck.

The only thing that hurt (and it was really just a pinch) was the lidocaine injection to numb the area. I felt a lot of tugging and pulling, but no pain at all. Like Irene, I also did not need any pain meds at all. The area was a little bruised for a few days, but that was it.
Congrats on getting deported. Please don't give it a moment's worry--it is very easy and pain-free.

Mine was just like they said, except i felt a little dizzy afterwards i think my blood pressure ran up just for a minute but i drove to and from the Dr's office. congrats on being deported. that's wonderful news to hear. keep us posted ok.~~MollyZ~~0 -

Port removal is such a happy occasion. Other than the slight pinch to numb the area, you shouldn't feel any pain so try not to worry about it. What I want to warn you about is the surgical tape. Chemo seems to have left me with a sensitivity to surgical tape. I waited too long to remove the tape after my port removal and my skin had blistered under the tape so when I removed the tape I had raw skin. If you have this problem you might mention it to your surgeon so they can use something else.0 -

I was awake when I had my port removed. The put a small curtain like structure by my head so that I couldn't see a thing. I felt a wee bit of tugging, it was a breeze! Congrats on getting deported!0 -

I didn't know what to expect either and was pleasantly surprised. I went to interventional radiology at the hospital where they put the port in. They started and IV as before, then back to the same suite as before. I thought they would give me Demerol and Versed as before. I felt a small sting and asked had they given me anything yet. They replied, it's out!! Mine had to be removed earlier because the radiology oncologist wanted it out so as not to interfere with upcoming treatments as it was placed on the same side as the mastectomy. You'll handle this like a champ!!! Congrats0 -

I was also not looking forward to the removal of my port. It was also done in DR office it is no big deal, but I used my numbing cream before I went, so I did not even feel the needle to make it numb the Dr said it saw fine to use it. Very little discomfort after. Good Luck It is a great milestone for you.0 -

They do keep
you awake for this. I know that it didnt hurt one bit when i had mine removed. Of course you do have the stinging of getting it numbed up. If you feel anything when they start to take it out just yell and tell them. They should be able to numb it more for you. I too hate pain and just know that it doesnt take long either. You will be fine, dont get scared over it. I promise you that it was easy for me.

Got my port out this morning
Hi....got my port out this morning. It was easier than getting it put in. I had local anesthesia along with sedation but was not completely put out. It went better than I thought it would....don't worry, you'll be fine.
A little word of advice of what I did. I put Lidacaine cream on my port area and also where they would be giving me the intravenous. Put the cream on an hour before you go to have your port removed. You can also put plastic wrap on top of the area where you put the cream. Believe me, it makes a world of difference when using this cream and does a fantastic job job at numbing the area. You barely feel the needles going in.

power port
I got my power port removed surgically yesterday. It was quite easy and I have no pain. I didn't like coming out of anesthesia...got RLS (restless leg) real badly. And had a reaction to an antibiotic in prep. But surgery and home again is fine. I am only using ibuprofen and that is for the rls.
I'd had the port just over 3 years. Initial treatment was all it was used for and quarterly labs. My Limitted Small Cell Cancer did not return. God was generous.0 -
