Mastectomy AFTER chemo
I am due to go back to have another visit with my surgeon who performed my 2 lumpectomies back in Feb in 2 months for a check up.
Is it too late to ask for a mastectomy then? I dont want to go through radiation, nor do I have any love what so ever for my breasts now. I want them both gone.
Thanks for any thoughts

I think others on this board
I think others on this board decided on a mastectomy after a lumpectomy. I would talk to the surgeon about it. I opted for the Mastectomy with chemo, rather than a lumpectomy with radiation, but that was 10 years ago and I never regretted my decision. Others here have been very happy with the lumpectomy.
Good luck on whatever you decide.0 -

Thank you. I just hope the option is still there for me to take when I get to see her again. I am very comfortable with removing both. No love lost at all.0 -

I had a lumpectomy, chemo and radiation.....after chemo, I must say, FOR ME, radiation was not a big deal at all....just having to go 5 days a week, for 6 weeks was the n in the butt!
Everything is a personal decision...we have to do what we feel is best for ourselves....
I wish you we'll....

mastectomy
I am now waiting for a surgery date for a double mastectomy (looking like mid-late April)
This decision was after I had a lumpectomy, chemo and radiation, finished the Monday before Thanksgiving. (honestly, I agree, other than going in daily, radiation wasn't as bad as I my head said it was going to be).0 -
I opted for a double
I opted for a double mastectomy when I only needed the left side. I also ended up doing radiation as I had trace amounts in 2 lymph nodes. I initially was under the impression that mastectomy meant no radiation which I found out is not true. It depends on factors such as age, percent of cancerous nodes, location of the tumor and size of the tumor. I wish you luck in your decision (I have no regrets and I finished all my treatments February 29).0 -

I had a double mastectomy after lumpectomy and chemo. About half way through the chemo I decided that I would not be able to go through chemo again (later in life) if I had a second local breast cancer. In addition, there were many suspicious areas on the 'good' breast. By the time I finished chemo., I decided that my breasts weren't my friends at all and they were trying to do me in! Based upon family history and some other factors, my medical onc. also recommended a double mastectomy in Dec. 2009. I haven't had reconstruction yet. No regrets!
