Forks Over Knives and Dr. David Servan-Schreiber
Also, Bennette posted some directions to find a link on MD Anderson's website for a video by Dr. David Servan-Schreiber. Here's a link to this if anyone is interested. It is 90 minute long, but there is a timer in the upper left corner so you can write down the time if you have to leave it and come back to it later. Anyway, thanks for that info, Bennette!

All that being said, I'm looking for some recommendations on good cookbooks for a plant based diet. I need info. on nutritional values and putting meals together, etc. This way of eating (WOE) would be a complete change for us and especially me, since I do all the cooking. (We both grew up in meat and potato or casserole households.) I'd like books/cookbooks that have normal ingredients that don't require you to fly to other countries to do your grocery shopping. LOL Our grocery store has a fairly decent organic section and it's only 30 minutes to an Earthfare store. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know. I feel like this will be akin to learning to walk again or something. lol

Plant-based diet info
Hi Lisa!
I, too, have taken on the plant-based diet after watching FOK. My husband and one of my kids have joined me, and it's really not all that difficult. My favorite cookbook is Everyday Happy Herbivore by Lyndsay Shay Nixon. She has a website and Facebook page so you can try some recipes before buying the book(s). She uses very simple ingredients, and everything I've tried, I've really liked. Engine 2 diet is also good. They're pretty militant about the no oil no fat thing, but they have a lot of good recipes and information. The founder is Rip Essylstein, son of Dr. Caldwell Esselstin from Forks Over Knives. They, too, have a Facebook page and website. Another good cookbook is Eat, Drink and Be Vegan. Not as low-fat as the other two, but still very healthy and simple recipes.
So glad you have taken this lifestyle on. I fully recommend it to anyone and everyone. I've lost weight without even trying, and I know it's helped with the Sutent side effects. And though I'm reluctant to credit the N.E.D. to the diet, I really do think it had something to with it. Food can heal.

I'm hoping so. It sounds like it's a slim to none chance to ever cure it, but it just can't possibly hurt it at all. I'm hoping for some reversal and praying for complete remission from the symptom's, at least. Just some slight relief would be nice. I suffer every day from it and it makes life difficult, although I try not to let it get to me.
I have been reading for years and years about Fibro and you just read so many different theories, but to me, there is a reason why there are millions of people suffering from it and only in the last couple decades or so. When I watch FOK and what Dr. Servan-Schreiber had to say and see the rise in cancer's over the last 50 years, it makes me wonder if the way we eat, the pesticides, etc. is contributing to the rise in other diseases as well. It makes sense to me.

Wow, thanks Jennifer! I really appreciate the information. I have been spending hours on the computer researching all of this and it's been somewhat overwhelming. Some books/articles say use Olive Oil while other's say not to. It's so confusing. I sure do appreciate some recommendations from someone who's tried these books.
I did do a lot of reading on the Esselstyn's and watched a video of Rip on youtube in which he showed some of the foods from the cookbook. Everything he showed looked great, so since you like it, too, I will order it right off and start there. I'm not a picky eater and love fruits, vegetables, etc. so I'm not worried about liking the recipes so much as I just didn't know where to start. I will look into everything you shared with me.
Another thing I was wondering about was putting the foods into actual meals. Hard to explain, but I mean getting the right amount of nutrients, food combinations, etc. into your daily intake. Have you read up on that at all? Is that in any of the books you mentioned?

I haven't looked at the Forks Over Knives book. If you get it, I'd love to know what you think. As far as getting all the nutrients you need, as long as you eat vegetables, fruits and whole grains, you're good. I've had lots of bloodwork done while on Sutent, and my calcium and protein levels are always normal. The only supplement I take is B12. That's the one vitamin that is only in animal products. Though many soy milk and rice milk products have that supplement in them.

my dentist recommended it when he found out I had kidney cancer. The movie freaked me out, but I havent fully converted. I did however cut out dairy, milk, yogurt and such. So hard to give up my smelly cheese though! I also cut back on meat and am cramming more veggies in every meal.0 -

I haven't worked out how to view Forks over Knives but I'm guessing its message is subsumed in the late Dr. David Servan-Schreiber's writings. I read the revised edition of anticancer with great interest. I've just lately watched the video, thanks to this thread, and found it valuable. I was pleasantly surprised to find a good deal in it that was additional (to anticancer) and well worth seeing. What a pity that we've lost another great man. Still, he left a a splendid legacy to all his fellow cancer sufferers, and others. If you haven't seen the video I suggest you do so, as well as read anticancer.

You might call Cancer Treatment Center at Mudwestern Regional Medical Center, Zion, IL. They have recently published a great cookbook ($12.00) for cancer patients. It isn't completely vegetarian, but is full of great recipes and helpful nutritional information. I too am a fan of the late Dr David ServN-Schreiber.
