I had tumors in both breasts -- I had an ultrasound guided biopsy on the left, because the tumor there was relatively shallow and easy to get to. On the right, however, the tumors were much deeper, so they had to do a stereotactic biopsy. The stereotactic biopsy also uses a core needle, but uses mammography instead of ultrasound to find the tumor.
None of my lumps could be felt from the outside -- women whose lumps are palpable can often have a fine needle aspiration biopsy, which uses a smaller needle and no ultrasound or mammography.
I think there is also such a thing as an MRI-guided biopsy, but don't quote me on that, and I don't know when that is used.

the tumor on my breast was very easy to see so they tried doing an needle biopsy but couldn't get anything out, so they put me out the next morning to so a lumpectomy. She woke me up when they got the initial results, told me positive but did not have clear margins. Asked her what she would do and she said a mastectomy. So one week later had the mastectomy.
Had a ultra sound guided needle biopsy on my thyroid because it was easy to get to, and had ct guided core biopsy on a tumor on my back to verify mets to the skin. And only know they did some kind of a core biopsy on the tumor on my spine to verify mets to the bones, but don't really know what, just how they did it.0 -

I did, also. I had a routine mammogram, then was called back for a sonogram, then a core needle biopsy with a surgeon was ordered. He told me at the time it was most likely cancer, and it was triple negative IDC.

I had my regular mammo, then got called back for more pics. I was then sent for a core needle biopsy that showed bc.0 -

My tumor was right up against the chest wall, so when they tried the stereotactic with mammmo, they couldn't get the image. Mission aborted. So, the radiologist had to do the biopsy under MRI. Same principal, just different imaging used. By the way, I guess because it was so deep, it hurt like hell!

Hi Susie
I also had this to confirm the supraclavicular, I have had a fna the first time (tumor was at 7 cm) so it was easy) and they immediately sent it to path. Thta was first confirmed dx of breast cancer. , I learned of the supra thru sterotactic I think and internal mammary too. Just in Jan I had a bronchoscopy lung biopsy to a hilar node in other side of chest. Its triple neg too. Not bad , easy procedure at MSKCC.

I have a co-worker who had a suspicious lump on her mammogram, they tried to do a stereotactic biopsy, and, like you, were unable to get to it. She eventually had an MRI which confirmed that it was not cancer, but this was years ago now, and she STILL goes on and on (and on and on...) about how angry she is that they couldn't do the stereotactic biopsy, like that means the radiologist was incompetent or something.
It was particularly fun when she would go off on this story to me while I was in treatment -- I just wanted to scream at her, "IT WAS BENIGN -- WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO COMPLAIN ABOUT?!?"

Core needle biopsy
Hi, Susie. Yes, I had the biopsy and the pathology report confirmed bc. Even though the doc and the techs who performed it didn't tell me anything at the time, I had the feeling that they could tell from the ultrasound, so I sort of knew before I got the results.
It's really no big deal as far as pain and discomfort go... I found it to be tolerable.0 -

It also depends on what imaging better appreciates the tumor. Mine were only seen in the ultra sound so stereotactic was not an option. Prior to BC I had a stereotactic biopsy for calcifications. Some women have a needle localization (with a mammo unit or ultrasound) in order to have the tumor biopsied surgically. They also use the needle loc for lumpectomies.
In some cases it depends on if the Radiology department is equipped to do biopsies or if they have to be done in the OR. One of the hospitals I worked at only did the biopsies in the OR. Kaiser does alot in the Radiology department.

I had one after the
I had one after the steriotec didn't work. After I was poked for 30 minutes and moved all around they decided it was a no go. Soo the following week I had the core needle biopsy. If I had been on video I would have made the world laugh! My "lump" was deep and under. Now picture the doctor on her knees, head angled up and the tech upside down trying to guide this needle in. It certainly took the edge off of what was going on. It also took almost an hour to get in place. My mammo found classifications that were suspicious. This biopsy proved it was what they thought.

I had that Susie and it did verify that I had bc. One of the memories I have of that is that I remember the hole that big needle made in me and thinking that it would always be there. LOL Funny the things we remember, isn't it.

Had the mammo done, told to go to sitting room, called back in for sono and told to stay there. Radiologist came in and said needed to do biopsies. OK. He numbed under arm and did the lymph node. Then said he wanted to try to get some from breast tissue that was deeper and might not be numb so could hurt but told me if I wouldn't swear to him that I wouldn't hit him, he would either not do it or would use a restraints. Actually, some quite large woman had not only hit him once but knocked him out because it 'hurt' according to his tech who was in there. She said she had never seen anyone that large move so fast.
It is strange what we remember at some times.
