The Center for Immunotherapy at Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI) has launched a phase I clinical research study of a dendritic cell vaccine designed to both eradicate cancer cells and prevent disease relapse. Developed at RPCI, the NY-ESO-1 dendritic cell vaccine will be manufactured in the Institute’s new Therapeutic Cell Production Facility using a unique FDA-approved process — making RPCI the first research facility in the U.S. to use a custom-made barrier isolator for vaccine cell production, and the first in the world to use this system in an approved, government-regulated study.

    Rapamycin .... who'd of thunk!? Thanks for the info BD. Sure hope it makes it to phase 4 trials.

    Some studies suggest that Rapamycin (an immunosuppressant drug used to prevent rejection in organ transplantation) significantly extends life…but we will see. There are a few scientific groups (being funded by Prostate Cancer Foundation (btw the most aggressive prostate cancer research group in the world) that are working on low cost vaccines…All good news and I hope some of us will be able to partake in the vaccines in the near term….

    If I am understanding right, the benefits of this vaccine, if it works will be better than apple pie and the Salk vaccine combined.........I hope....I hope...I hope

    I started this therapy 2 weeks ago.I have had no side effects except chills at the end of
    infusion session.I hope anyone that has not heard of this talk to their doctors.I am very optimistic

    I met a couple of patients who are on Provenge, and they are doing very well. I spoke with a rep from the company, and as I understand the drug is better than it's made out to be since as I remember some of the original patients in the trial were not treated as quickly as others.

    Please let us know how you do as you receive the rest of the treatments.

    By the way where are you being treated?

    I am being treated at 21st Century Oncology in Fort Myers,Fl
    I just came back from my second blood draw and feel fine. Thursday will be my second infusion.

    Let me join this thread to wish you the best in your treatment. Not many guys report on Provenge and your comments are so important to the many pondering on Immunotherapy Vaccines.
    I am a believer on the capabilities of our bodies to combat disease and vaccines have shown to be so successful in activating our systems timely. Please let us know developments along your course.

    Can you share info on your diagnosis, chronology and the reasons for your choice in this treatment?

    I hope you get a positive response and recover the soonest.

    Provenge
    I was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2005.
    Started with radiation and then had seed implants.About 2 years ago my PSA started to rise
    and I was put on the hormone Eligard every 6 months. Things were going along fine until this past december when my PSA started to rise.
    I got together with my urologist and oncologist and they suggested I start with Provenge.
    I have great confidence in these two doctors.
    The treatment is broken down into 3 sessions 2 weeks apart.I had my second blood collection yesterday and I will have my second infusion thursday.
    The worst part of the treatment is the white blood cell colection that takes 3-4 hours and you cannot move either arm.
    The infusion is about an hour and the only side effect was chills toward the end.
    All in all, not so bad if it works
