port infection

Has anyone had a port infection? My mom has a tiny fluid filled blister near her port and I am concerned this might be a port infection.

    Infection
    I never officially had a port infection, although I was treated for two. In hindsight, I think it was just cellulitis. If you have any concerns, have her see her oncologist very soon, or go to the ER. A port problem is nothing to be ignored.

    What is the difference between the two? My mom has no fever. Her chemo nurse saw this last friday and wasn't alarmed. I agree. I am going to suggest she go tomorrow instead of waiting for Friday when she is scheduled for chemo.

    When did your mom get her port in? I just had my port taken out and I got blisters from the steri strips. It looked terrible. I had about 10 blisters and several of them got to be about the size of a dime. I also got a rash around where the adhesive bandage was. This only happened one other time. I think that it has to do with the anticeptic they use and it causes a chemical reaction with certain steri strips. Just my theory though.

    All I know is if your mom developes a fever, I would call her physician immediately. For my blisters, I just put neosporin on it so it wouldn't get infected.

    In any event, I would call your mom's physician and let them know.

    I just re-read your posts. If they are using some type of adhesive bandages when they use your mom's port she may be having a reaction to the bandages. Also, you may want to rule out a latex allergy (ie: nurses gloves, etc.)

    This is inflammation rather than infection. I was getting redness in the area of my port or the cathether that feeds up to my neck. I'm sure it was a reaction to the acidity of the IV vitamin C I was getting, but the doctors treated it like an infection.

    Cellulitis can be either infection or just inflammation. I was told that if the port is accessed before the antiseptic has dried, the local area could get inflamed from that.

    Impetigo shows up as a blister but it spreads like wildfire.

    Hi, I had something similar last year. I had alot of redness near my port and was on 9 weeks of antibiotics. My dr. said it was a cellulitis. However, I developed this as to the way the chemo nurse accessed my port. Needless to say I wasn't a happy little camper because the facility I went to did not want to admit that it happened because of the chemo nurse, but that's what I truly believe. My port was only 3 months old when this happened.

    My skin is weird around the port
    I would watch the area and if there are any changes call the dr or go to er, but I left the bandage on too long and my skin was very red and tender I believe t it is from the adhisive on the bandaid. So now I remove it as soon as I get home from chemo
