pet scan results

in Colorectal Cancer #1
well i talked to the doc on monday and he told me the results were that there was several tumors on my liver and the largest of which was on my right lobe the size is 6.4cm, i do not much about sizes is this a large one or not? i do know that the doctor told me that it was not operable and we would check it again in 2-3 months.

    I also have Mets on my liver which are spread out. I also have one about the same size as you. My tumors have started shrinking during chemo. I am just doing the 5 fu pills for now it's called Xeloda thus far I have not had any side effects thank God.

    Well, I am so sorry for all that you are facing at this young age. I have not had to endur what you are going through currently so I can not answer any of your questions. Be strong John and ask questions, questions, questions. Don't be afraid to bother the Drs. or nurses to get answers. I know I feel like I am burdening my Drs. sometimes with what I perceive to be dumb questions...but remember they are the ones with the expertise. If they do not help you, move on to someone who will or get a second opinion. Be your own advocate John and believe, believe, believe that you will survive this. God's healing touch to you and I hope all goes well with chemo.

    That's a good size one...about the size of a small tangerine, just to give you some kind of an idea.

    I had one on my liver that was about 8.0 cm or perhaps slightly bigger...they said it was the size of an orange.

    Hopefully you will be a candidate for surgery at some point. Personally, I think that 3 months is about a month too late...I'd shoot for 2 months and see what the size is then - we could better determine the growth rate at that point if it's incrementing.

    I hope you are on some kind of chemo, Folfox or Folfiri, because we don't want that tumor to keep growing unchecked. I futzed around this past year and got myself in a whole world of hurt by watching too long. I was fortunate, but another month or so of messing around and the outcome could have been much different.

    John what is important now is to achieve a good shrinkage
    of the tumor that allows you to be operated, I had several tumors as well one of them even bigger than yours , after 9 rounds of Folfox we achieved enough shrinkage to be operated and I was.

    I agrre with Craig. Be agressive on the scan schedule. I was clean for 3 years so I waited over a year for my next scan and BAM they found an 8cm tumor. fortunately for me it was the only one so it was operable but when they had my cut open they found that the tumor had grown out of my liver and attached to my diaphram and they found a second tumor on my abdominal wall. They were able to get it all but it has now spread outside of my liver for the first time in 6+ years. I can't help wonder if I had stuck to scans every 6 months they would have caught it while it was still contained in the liver.

    John, is this your initial scan prior to treatment? 6.4 cm is large but my wife's started out at almost 12 cm - it is shrinking now during chemo. assuming you have a ways to go with chemo my guess is that your tumors will be evaluated later for operability. there are certain criteria which will be used to decide this. but be sure to get a liver surgeon's opinion with regard to the liver and a colon surgeon's opinion on your colon if you have not had it removed.

    yes i am on chemo i go for my second round on monday they are giveing me Folfiri and so far my joints and hurt and my mouth is sore and i wake up everyday feeling like the mac truck left tire marks on my back
