Finished 1st round of Chemo

Had my first round of chemo yesterday. Long day...arrived at 830am and didn't get home until 430pm.

The entire process, although lengthy, was uneventful. Started out with Benadry, Pepcid, Steroid, Anti-nausea medicine. Next was 3 hour infusion of Taxol followed by 1 hour infusion of Carboplatin.

Like I said, all went well and today I have the red face flush but that's about it.

The infusion area is adjacent to the peds infusion area. There is a wall of pictures of their patients-mostly school pictures. There have to be at least 600 pictures on the wall. I just couldn't believe it. Did children always get cancer or is this something new that has occurred over the last 10 years or so?

    Glad your first day of treatment went uneventful. Just drink plenty of fluids today.
    You may feel pretty tired the next day.

    Hi pat, I had my #2 chemo yesterday, your day sounded exactly like mine. Woke up this morning with the flush, did you have the anti nausea Emend, it's expensive but works well. OnE good thing all mthose premeds made me sleep like a baby last night sleep 10 hrs.

    I know day 2-4 usually gets worst the leg pains and flu like symptoms.

    Tomorrow I start with Neuprogen shots to boost my wait count, it's was low when I got my chemo. I hate that the most about this whole treatment plan.
    But I was Neutropenic prior to cancer, so I started with a minus.

    How many treatments are you planed for?

    Hope you have mininamal side effects.

    Great you've made the first long, long day. Boy I do remember that one as it was rather unnerving as not really a clue what to expect, but I was a trooper as you were.

    Great advice to drink plenty of fluids and get some whey protein in your system, plus eat very small meals to not upset the stomach with overload. Rest..rest..rest!!! It would take me approx 4-5 days to get back to my normal self, but was sure to allow myself to recover by resting and watching what I ate to keep up my strength.

    Unlike Irene, I didn't have Neulasta shots until my last 3 treatments as had sandwiched in between my 6 rounds of chemo 33 sessions of pelvic radiation. Hopefully you'll recover your blood count on your own.

    Best to you and keep us posted on your progress...you're on your way!!

    Irene...I was not prescribed any meds nausea or otherwise. Didn't really sleep well last night.
    My treatment is 3 rounds of taxol/chemo in 3 week intervals 30 radiation and 3 more rounds of chemo.

    Jan...reading all the great posts, I gota lot of good info. I drink a lot of crystal light but have been trying to drink water instead. Drinking some Smart Water and drink a glass of water each time I go into the bathroom. As for the whey protein, I am drinking Isopure. I like the Isopue because it is more like koolaid and not thick.

    Pat glad you made it through your first treatment
    Hope you do well these next days, too. I never slept well after the treatment, as I had steroids I took for three days afterwards. I remember people calling them "hamster days" as you have all this energy. I have my taxol over 5 hours and the carbo was over 2 hours, so I too had long days.

    Continue with the fluids and nutrition. Good luck with the rest of the treatments. In peace and caring.

    Pat, if you need meds do not hesitate to ask for them immediately. To be honest, every chemo patient I know has been given a prescription for one, and usually two, nausea meds. I had Zofran, Compazine, and Emend.

    Funny, because the chemo nurse asked if I was prescribed something as well. I do have 10 Zofran they gave me after my lymph node biopsy so that will do for now. Only had a little nausea when I woke up this morning. Ate a couple of crackers and it went away.

    I do seem to be experiencing some pains in the pelvic/butt area. It is almost a pulsating type of pain.

    I think my biggest pain is at the IV site. That hurts!

    Pat, were you offered the option of getting a port instead of using veins for chemo? A port really is a blessing.

    Zofran (Pat)
    I was told to start Zofran the day after chemo and to take it for three days, every 8 hours without fail. So your 10 would have been just enough.

    Once that nausea gets "ahead of you", it is often too late to do anything about it.

    Pat ,I too was instructed to take anti-nausea pills after chemo
    I hope you get some pills for back- up anyway. I too would highly recommend a port before your next chemo treatments. Chemo is so hard on your veins. Glad you are having minimal nausea. Hope that continues for you. In peace and caring.

    Nausea/Port
    I may call the onc nurse Monday and ask about this if I experience nausea. I do have some meds I had after my lymph node biopsy.

    Having a port was never suggested. The chemo nurse did admire my veins.

    Thanks for the wishes, but today the leg pain and all over achy, I don't know if it's from the taxol, or the Neuprogen, 2nd shot today.
    as soon as my legs starting throbbing i took a viciden, and packed my legs with heating pad, did that help. And i stayed on the coush allmday, I noticed when then pain starts so does some nausea, took some Zofran. One thing is weird, with this Neuprogen shot my jaws is very sensitive even all my teeth. I'm doing a lot more brushing more than usual.
