I began AC chemo treatment in Jan
after first treatment got diverticulitis(I had prior to BC)
was in hospital on iv antibiotics for 3 days
oncologist is telling me to have colon surgery before
any more chemo to prevent diverticulitis from
causing more delays
there is no concrete statistics one way or the other
has anyone heard of this or know anyone who went thru this?
I'm going to call another oncologist on Monday
Thanks for any help

    sorry dont know anything
sorry dont know anything except chemo wreaked havoc with my digestive system. seeing a GI didnt help as they said it was the chemo and would not resolve until I was done. Can they put you on maintanance antibiotics? In my experience oncs dont know anything but cancer. My onc suggested a colostomy for a rectal fissure to bypass the problem. hmmmm.
I would see someone with experience in diverticulitis to give you some suggestions on management or a surgical opinion.

    Diverticulitis
It seems to me that the appropriate specialist for you to be consulting is a gastroenterologist NOT an oncologist. The gastro doctor specializes in problems of the digestive tract. This doctor should, of course, consult with your oncologist to get his professional input. Between the two of them they should be able to figure out a course of treatment for you. I wish you luck.
