Everyone is different and
Everyone is different and recover at different rates of speed. My mom (84) has been off rads and chemo since 1/6/12 and she still has a cough and still has pain.
Her age has a lot going against her, but she is a real trooper - keeps on going and going. Her esophagus is ulcerated from the rads, but the tumor has gone from over 8 cm to 2 cm! Real good news! They stretched her esophagus so she is swallowing much better today too. They put in a feeding G-Tube.

Hi Lynn
Hi lynn, My husband has suffered alot from radiation treatments as well. The coughing and gaging was horrible. Finally we figured out..Precription Prilosec really helped alot, he still takes liquid Hydrocodone at times. Dad does not need to be in pain. The coughing IS very painful. The hydrododone and prescription Prilosec might provide your dad needed comfort.
First Magic Mouth Wash- termporary pain relief, numbs but wears off fast
Next he tried Carafate- lubricates makes swallowing a little easier
Then a liquid Hydrocodone pain relief but will not help heal ulcers
****Prescription Prilosec (omeprazole) sooths and compliments the healing process.
The Prilsec helped tremedously, 2 times a day. Hydracodone he still takes Periodically.
Medical Marijunana also helped with the pain, increased appetite and ensured a good nights sleep.
Hope this helps Lynn. Call your Doc. there is no reason Dad should be in pain with all of the pain meds available.0
