We saw the Madison Team yesterday and everything seems to be a go for the liver resection. They said they will be calling in the next couple days and will have surgery in next two weeks. Needless to say we are so happy except that they informed us that this surgery has a 3% mortalilty rate. This is wonderful odds (I do understand that) but it still scares us. We should be celbrating like rock stars but the 3% thing has us down. The doctor says she doesn't expect any problems for him because he is young and strong (55), she also used the "cure" word again which I didn't think we used that word with stage lV. She said she believes he has a real chance at a cure.

Were the rest of you given those same odds (3%) ( I know, I am fixated)? I have read about alot of resections on this board and never heard this. I know that with any surgery there is a small chance of dying. I guess I just need you all to tell me it's all going to be alright. I have know reason to doubt that GOD is going to give us this and I feel guilty for being afraid. If anyone could say something positive that I could relay to my husband that would be wonder.
BTW, today is the one year anniversary of diagnoses. Yikes!

Thanks in advance for your replies...
GOD's blessing to you all.
Brenda

They always have to give the odds, it's never 0 percent, but 3 percent is darn close to 0 percent, my surgery was 9 1/2 hours doing colon, liver and ureter resections at the same time with three different surgeons, my odds were less, but of course you have to factor in, that I'm in my 50's and not in my 80's and those 3 percent could be many in their late 70's and 80's but; I certainly didn't eat right (hello, love my pepsi's and deserts and hamburgers; the list goes on)and smoked two packs a day. Still here, surgery went great, so please, don't dwell on the little percentages, you would get the same ones from a doctor bandaging your cut finger, incase, incase, incase, due to insurances and lawsuits, there's always an incase followed by a percentage.
So please, enjoy the fact of the surgery and look forward to it. Also, yes there can be cure rates for stage IV's.

    Surgery
Yes there is always a chance, but it is so slim and rest assured that your surgeon has not only done this one time but hundreds. Right before my colon resection being so scared of just that fact, tears started rolling down my eyes. It's harder on the one waiting for the patient than the patient themself. You are the one that is going to go bonkers but you both will be perfectly fine. I'll say good luck, but you have great odds in your favor :)

All of your news sounds great!
Not for nothing but there's probably an 8% mortality rate for the drive to the hospital...

    The flip side
I guess you could also interpret the doctor's remarks as there is a 97% chance of everything going right.

    Hello Brenda. My husband had
Hello Brenda. My husband had his resection in Dec I was also worried about the surgery itself. But it went very well. You are perfectly normal to be afraid though. I was a nervous wreck. The recovery was fine too he was up and in a chair after the first day and walking the hall after that. He was released 6 days later. Take care! Alex

    worry
Less than 4 weeks ago I had the right lobe and 2 sections of the left removed. I actually was not worried about the surgery itself. I was so excited. They didn't give me any premeds, I guess because I was so calm. I remember positioning myself on the operating table and looking up at the bright lights. They said I would go to sleep now ......yup...lights out......the team then went to town, doing what they love to do.
Brenda, dump all your worries at the Lord's feet.
I heard a sermon about "worry", it was sooooooo good. God says your worry is a sign that you are not fully trusting in Him. To me that was a big relief.
Enjoy and be thankful for these next days leading up to surgery.

    The Glass
Is 97% full and only 3% empty.

I like how you put it Tina with it being 97% successful.
I agree. It's very good odds.
