Komen drops plan to cut Planned Parenthood grants!
"We want to apologize to the American public for recent decisions that cast doubt upon our commitment to our mission of saving women's lives," a Komen statement said.
As first reported by The Associated Press on Tuesday, Komen had adopted criteria excluding Planned Parenthood from grants because it was under government investigation, notably a probe launched in Congress at the urging of anti-abortion groups.
Komen said Friday it would change the criteria so it wouldn't apply to such investigations.
"We will continue to fund existing grants, including those of Planned Parenthood, and preserve their eligibility to apply for future grants," the statement said.

I heard this on the news
I heard this on the news earlier Megan. I guess the backlash of their stupid mistake finally soaked in. I've never given money or participated in any of the Komen events after I read what a small percentage actually goes for anything to do with bc.
I have always felt that the American Cancer Society was the only place to donate if you really want your money to go towards fighting cancer and not plumping up their own salary's as the Komen foundation does.

I too have heard about the recent fiasco in the press regarding Komen and Planned Parenthood. I actually have donated to Komen, but quite frankly, I'm getting a little fed up with mail solicitations at least once or twice a week for more money (which have to cost them tons of money to send out all the time), and I'm really getting tired of hearing about the 3-Day, which won't even happen for many months here in Phoenix.
I really want my money to go to where it makes the most impact on finding a cure for this sh***y disease. Please enlighten me on why you have "had it" with the organization.
Thanks for your input.

I had it with Komen when they announced they were taking away all funding from Planned Parenthood because of some politics basically. Little did they care about the women that would be denied breast screenings now that could literally save their lives.
But, the public got to them, Komen, and they have now reversed their decision. I still wouldn't give them a penny as I've never cared for Komen. Even their website is out of date in regards to new information on bc and treatments.0 -

I am done with them. I really looked into it further and saw that they are paying their COO of a non profit over 500K a year, that is only one of the top in the organization, didn't find what the others are making. They brought in over 300 million last year, and yet less than 5 million went to adv research, and that covered grants and all for it. I realize that they are making bc more aware to the public, but where is the support for the women and men without insurance, and if the main goal is to find the cure, why are they spending money that is being donated on suing other non profits for using pink ribbons?
Maybe this was not such a bad thing this last week as more and more people actually looked at where all the money is going? We need a cure, and men and women with bc and no insurance or limited insurance need help with care, testing, and everyday life.
The only reason they changed their stance now was because some major corporations are threatening to stop contributing, and some refused to have their names associated with sgkf. So.....
This is just my take on it. I agree that the AMC has done more for bc than Komen, and there is nothing wrong with donating to non-profit cancer centers for research directly. You know where your money is going. Here I like the Cancer Wellness House, they have services donated that any cancer patients can use, massages, yoga, counseling for families as well as cancer patients, rides.... so Komen may be the best known, but not necessarily the best!0 -
My ramblings....
This victory is bittersweet for me. I am glad that Komen has decided to once again contribute to PP, but what a mess! They have shot themselves in the foot by becoming involved in politics instead of focusing on what is right for women. Now, there will be angry folks on both sides of the fence and breast cancer research will suffer. That VP's (Karen Handel) head would have to roll before I would begin to think about a donation.
And, if their ultimate goal was to destroy PP, well that didn't work well, did it? PP has probably made a cool million in 2 days.
Please look into Breast Cancer Research Foundation, an organization started by the late Evelyn Lauder. Check it out on Charity Navigator--it is consistently given the highest ratings for getting the $ into research. Or give directly to a trusted research institution. Just please don't throw the baby out with the bathwater.
There is so much exciting research going on right now and I would hate to see funding drying up....
P.S. I also always also donate to ACS for obvious reasons :-).0 -

I have not donated to SGK foundation, but must admit they certainly have made the world more aware. How shameful that politics play into this. I'm usually very cautious when donating because I want to know where my money is going and how they are spending it.
My donations go to Moffitt which is constantly doing research and the ACS, which was most helpful to me when I was going thru treatment. My cousin asked me a while back if I would recommend donations to SGK and I flat out told her where I would send my money.0 -

I reviewed grant applications for Komen this year. These were not research grants. They were applications from community organizations for education, screening, treatment, and access to care for the underserved. I have no idea what they give to research, but I do know that our local chapter funds quite a few organizations that do very worthwhile work. I didn't know this and I was very pleasantly surprised. I have no idea what percentage of funding is given vs what is donated.
I also did the Race for the Cure last year for the first time. I'll be doing it again this year. It brings awareness to a lot of breast cancer things beyond Komen because many other organizations have tables, including the peer navigator group I volunteer for. We recruited several new navigators last year - because there is so much public hoop-de-la about the walk, there are a lot of people who see us and learn about us.
I donate to the cancer center where I received my treatment. I figure Komen gets plenty. It also receives $$ from Komen, a lot more than I give. I don't care if my small donations go to cutting edge research or paving the parking lot. Both are needed so that patient care and research for breast cancer can be delivered.
Komen definitely shot itself in the foot with their initial decision, but I do think they do some darn good work in spite of their shortcomings.

The Komen chapter here happens to give millions to my cancer center. I think we are the largest chapter or 2nd largest. Anyway I totally agree with all the posts here and was glad to see the written response by all those senators that made them reverse their decision.
While I am tempted to continue to withhold support, the local chapter publishes what they get and where it goes and a LOT goes for what we want, so I am torn. Maybe by June I will reconcile with myself about this.0 -

"(In the 2009-2010 fiscal year)...Komen reported approximately US $360 million in expenses. $283.2 million of this went towards program services: $75.4 million (20.9 percent of total expenditure) went to research, $140.8 million (39.1 percent) went to public health education, $46.9 million (13 percent) went to health screening services, and $20.1 million (5.6 percent) went to treatment services. The other $76.8 million went to supporting services, including $36.1 million (10 percent of total expenditure) toward fund-raising costs and $40.6 million (11.3 percent) toward general and administrative costs.
The Komen CEO salary in 2010 was $459,406 a year." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Susan_G._Komen_for_the_Cure
That $75+ million to research has been my main reason for supporting Komen. And that it why I am angry that they hired an extremist for a VP and have chosen to do possibly irreparable harm to our cause by choosing politics over breast cancer. I sincerely hope they get back on track, because, right this minute, I bet corporate sponsors are heading for the hills. Few corporations will want to be associated with a controversial charity.0 -

I've never like Komen and this was the icing on the cake. I read that their CEO is one, if not the top highest paid CEO there is. That tells me a lot.
I prefer to donate to the Cancer center that I go to. They helped me and now I can help them in some small way.
