in Kidney Cancer #1
Is it normal after surgery, 10 days out, to have pain like a dull throb, or to feel like the kidney hits things like your ribs. Its just uncomfortable, but I was wondering if anyone else experiences this? Doc said I will feel more being so young cuz my nerves are more responsive. Though i did notice a numbness in my hip area that comes and goes, assuming there was some nerve damage during surgery. Thanks. Hope everyone is have a good weekend. Today was the first time out of the house since surgery on the 19th, did a little costco run and errands. Now I know was it feels like to be morbidly obese. Back hurts, walk slow, tired easily, not easy to take deep breaths.

    It's all normal
    Glad to hear you were out and about. I bet it felt good to leave the house for a little bit.

    The pain, numbness, walking slow and hunch over, and getting insanely tired from going to Costco is all normal. Slowly it will start feeling a little better every day, but rest assure the worse is now behind you. Slow and steady from now on.

    Sounds like you are progressing normally.
    I took me 16 days after the surgery to get to Costco.

    did my math wrong, took 9 :)
    So it is normal for the kidney to ache all the time? That is just my biggest concern. I cant see what is going on in there! I want it to be okay and heal perfectly, I am a bit type A.
    Plus I was getting a bit house crazy. I wasn't expecting how much I hurt when I was out. My dad was pretty freaked out when I had to lean on the cart in line, he seems to pretend nothing has happened but is extra careful around me. Funny how he couldn't even look at me in the hospital, I think he was so terrified that he could lose me that he completely freaked out. Been okay around the house, like I said he acts like everything is normal and wont even use the word cancer. Guess being his first born girl and best friend is harder on him then I thought.
    One last thing, is it normal to cry all the freaking time?? Geeze I get choked up over everything and at night when I am alone its just a freaking sob fest out of know where!

    Emotions and recovery
    girlypants, do yourself a favour and spend a few minutes reading the thread called "Am I losing my mind" - at the moment it's on about the 35th line below this thread and you'll see that your experience is something most of us share.

    It's tough on your best friend but as he sees you up and about, getting out of the house and getting on with your life it will be reassuring for your Dad and he, along with you will find it a whole lot easier to live with.

    I ventured out yesterday with my wife and grandchild. I am 50 years old and had my right kidney removed on 1/10/2012. I had a 7cm mass on my kidney which had grown less than a year. I received a stent in my heart in 2009 and was placed on blood thinners. I started with a dull pain on my left side that caused me to seek help. It was discovered that the 2cm had grown to a 7cm.The cancer was located only on my right kidney. The first week after the surgery was the most difficult time for me.Trying to determine the best way to get some sleep. I do not have the energy I would like and find myself still trying to find the best postion to sleep. I will say that everyday that passes it gets easier. I have lost 15 pounds since my surgery. My appetite has increased and I feel like I am getting stronger. I feel every bump in the road now and I know eventually I will not notice it. I just want everyone who is about to experience the removal of their kidney, the pain will go away. Family is a very important factor in your recovery. Have patience and do not try to force the healing process. Continue to be positive and plan for the future because we are all survivors.

    Post Surgey Pain
    Post Surgery Pain is normal. You just had major abdominal surgery. The first few days are terrible. The first few weeks are a little rough. The pain is still there for a few more weeks. It is not until 4 to 6 weeks that you feel comfortable doing most of your daily activities and then only in moderation. I was 59 at the time. The younger you are the earlier you should be able to get on with your life and all of its activities. The pain each of you is going thru is normal. If you feel it is beyond normal seek help. The help may turn out to only be a little reassurance or some medicine to make things easier.Things do get better. It just takes time.Best wishes to all.
