Diet
Hi Nicole,
Biggest change for me was cutting way back on salt to lower my blood pressure (high blood pressure being bad for the remaining kidney). Soon after my surgery, my urologist told me not not to go on any of the high protein fad diets. Normal consumption is okay. He also told me to be wary of too much potassium, although my nephrologist said I shouldn't worry about that because that warning is primarily for folks who are in later stages of kidney disease. I watch it anyway. I've eliminated colas and cut back on my diet root beer consumption, replacing it with seltzer water. Gotta have that fizz. Other than these things I am still the finicky eater I have been for years. Too old and set in my ways to go the veggie route now.

Mike that is the same thing my doctor told me. I am 32 my blood pressure has always been great before surgery it was 109/65 last week it was 126/65 so its still good but for me I thought top number was high.Mike for me I find it very hard 2 shop for a family of six going the healthy way . I know its what I need 2 do for the family.But the children are not happy with Me!!!!!! Lol0 -

I watch protein, phosphorus, and sodium, gave up beef and pork sticking with chicken, turkey, and seafood with more fruits and veggies. FYI, ground turkey works well as a substitute for ground beef in most recipes. Hydration is also very important, make sure you are drinking plenty of water every day. Try changing things gradually over several months and your family will notice it less, before long they will be eating healthy without even realizing it.
They'll thank you in the long run,

I'm terrible about my diet. Since October I don't watch what I eat. Every one was saying,"You're too skinny, you need more weight for energy reserves". I was so much better before. However, I think I'll slim down for the summer any way. You would think my diet would be a natural expectation from me. I think about the Krebs cycle and it all breaks down to adp and atp (if I remember correctly) for muscle fuel. However, I do drink my V-8 daily and think to myself that there may not be anything else that I'll do today that is better for me.0 -

Nicole, the DASH diet is a pretty good one for fending off cancer, heart disease, diabetes etc., being designed to help control blood pressure - important for everyone but crucial for members of our club! A good introduction is on this Mayo Clinic site

The most important single item is probably to eat as little salt as you can manage. As Gary said, very gradual change is best and it's surprising how successfully you can move someone's taste from an unhealthy to a healthy diet. Also, as the man said, plenty of fluids. Like you, I have been in the way of guzzling coffee day and night. I'm trying to swap some mugs of espresso for fruit juices and green tea.
Generally though, aside from avoiding a high protein diet, our requirements are much like everyone else's and it's just a shame that 'most everyone else eats a pretty unhealthy diet these days - hence the obesity epidemic and all the ills that brings. Good luck with feeding the family but you'll certainly be doing right by them if you can have them eating healthily.0 -
Changed Diet
Almost afraid to say it cause I got slaughtered on another site but yes we did. We eat only organic and we work in the 80/20 rule. Meaning we eat food that is alkaline and 20% acidic as much as possible. There is a theory that these tumors proliferate in an acid environment. The body does its job to balance both sides but the closer to neutral you are the better.
My sis is a research scientist in Switzerland and says if u had C there you would next see a nutritionist who would guide your diet by comorbidities and blood type. We are O+ which is seen as the origin of all blood types and the most fragile. They do not turn sugar over as well as the evolved types.
So we eat range chicken and ocean caught fish(not shell high acid) and try to use things that vegans do. Avoiding animal by products. Lots of Indian dishes with tumeric and cinnamon. No caseine and no dairy. Low glycemic, suger is acidic, use almond milk coconut oil.
We did consult a nutritionist and in 2 visit got what we needed to arm ourselves. We use the alkalize or die book for guidance about foods.
So does it work, how can we prove that. But since Cody was diagnosed he has not had any new disease, no adverse reaction to sutent and it has been working with huge affects. He believes that this has augmented his response and today he is almost to NED.

My wife is currently at a raw food class! She has helped me shift my diet, more fruit and veggies, raw veggies (spinach, brocheli etc) is good since the cancer fighting enzymes are not dstroyed from the cooking process.
Cut way back on red meat. Going as much organic as we can (reduce pesticides, hernacides, fungacides...). Also cut out milk, went to the almond milk which is pretty good.
So, nobody is perfect, and I feel every little bit helps, last night I had tacos with beef so there you go.
More nuts, cut out all the bleached stuff like white braed and pasta. It has been a very big chnage for me as previously I ate red meat and carbs, very little veggies fruit or water.
We have been reading a few cancer books, one is "Eat to Live". check it out.

For recipes, a great resource is Happy Herbivore. Lots and lots of yummy recipes. She has a website and facebook page, so she's pretty easy to find.
Also, Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn has done TONS of research on diet. The China Study is pretty interesting.....he's also featured a whole lot in the movie, "Forks Over Knives". That movie can be downloaded from Netflix.

I recently bought a Vitamix - I had been wanting one for some time but wasn't willing to pay $400 plus for something if I wasn't sure I would use it. I finally decided after much reading and talking to others than have them, that my health was worth the cost. I have to tell you it is changing my eating habits.
Like so many, my life is busy with work and then coming home and taking care of my mother. It leaves me little time to take care of myself. Since my surgery in Oct of 2010, I have gotten incredibly out of shape, due to the long recovery/complications I had and restrictions I also have on my life. It's so easy to reach for what's easy and convenient when it comes to food, and those are the very things that are causing me harm health-wise.
I am all about convenience - I want something to be quick and easy. I also am always looking for ways to incorporate healthy foods into my son's diet (picky eater) and for my mom, who is down to 90 pounds and has trouble eating (slow eater, has to be fed, loses interest). I feel like a Vitamix salesperson here BUT I will say I LOVE this machine.
It's better than juicing because I am getting whole fruits and vegetable, not just the juice. I make green smoothies every day with things like fresh pineapple (core included), fresh spinach, bananas, oranges...you name it. This morning mom and I had tofu, spinach, kale, onion, tomato, broccoli, carrot, cilantro, parsley, hot sauce, garlic and salt all whipped up in the Vitamix. Mom drank it all down as did I. If anyone is serious about getting more whole fresh fruits and veggies into their diets and also be able to make soups and dips and more (I have even ground meat in mine), I would suggest checking it out. I have lost 6 pounds in two weeks - not by dieting, but by changing my eating habits in a very fast and easy way. Trust me, I am queen of convenience when it comes to cooking. Best investment I've ever made.

I love my Vitamix, too!! I plopped down the $400 after my surgery as well. Well worth it! I use it at least once a day. There's no way I could ingest so may dark, leafy, green veggies without it.

Yes...and according to Cliff Claven, as in nature with predator vs. prey only the slow and weak are culled from the heard, thus alcohol only kills the slow, weak, and stupid brain cells which explains why we get so much smarter as we drink.
A theory I'll be testing for two weeks starting Monday.0 -
