'baby it's cold outside'....another Dutch day....
Now, I am getting excited, as well as many of our dutch friends. Why? Well, the expression goes "When a birdbath freezes over, the dutch break out their skates."....(I have 2 pairs, my beau has 3...one pair for each is always sharpened and at the ready...*smile*).
Tomorrow morning is the market downtown, outdoors as usual (come wind, rain, sleet and snow...it's always outside, in the same place, and always on Fridays and Saturdays...since the town was built in the 14th century. The grandfather of the fruit seller sold to my beau's grandfather...now THAT'S tradition!!!! It is quite a social gathering for us, always meeting friends there, and getting samples of fruit and cheese, and eating a herring or freshly fried battered fish (called kibbling....mmmmm!). And buying bread that just came out of the oven they have on the market. MMMMM! (we are lucky to get all the bread home intact, normally we break pieces off to savor as we walk...).
I will be bundled up, with my long underwear on, and my thermal socks, and my down vest under my below-the-knee coat. Thinsulate gloves and a cashmere shawl.
Tonight is my favorite dinner...Hutspot....a mash made from boiled potatoes, carrots, onions, and a piece of boiled beef (so tough it can't be cooked for anything else) that is cooked for a long time...with au jus poured on top...
Dutch hugs, Kathi

Kibbling and hutspot both
Kibbling and hutspot both sound perfect for a cold winter's day. And ice skating! I am so jealous--winter here has been wet and warm so far.0 -

The market sounds awesome and the food...yummy! I haven't been on ice skates since my late twenties.....let's not "do the math"....haha
We're experiencing a VERY mild winter even for us in the South East...it's 63 degrees right now at 5:00 PM.... this time last year we had already had two snow storms....I'm one of the " strange one's" who love cold weather...so I'm jealous! I love reading your posts, we can pretend we're there....
Have fun!

And in Southern California there aren't many *smile*, although my dutch friends think I'm nuts for being here when it is in the high-70's in my hometown there right now...
I, too, like the cold. And sitting inside *grins* where it's warm, watching the snow fall.

California Gals scratching my head wondering what happened to winter, cooling
under ceiling fans.
I am so jealous of your snow, and lovely market place. Samples of fruits, and cheese -- now, that is a good time.
Hoping you get a chance to use your skates, very soon! Have fun
Enjoy.
