wedge resection

In Feb. 2010 I saw a doctor for a dry cough. No relief. Two doctors later I finally had a chest x-ray. My right lung was half filled with fluid. Two days later I had my lung tapped and drained. An hour later I was in triage at my local hospital coughing up copius amounts of blood. A c-scan was taken of the lungs and cought a tumor on the top of the right kidney. It was large and intruded into the renal vein. A month later I had a radical nephrectomy of the right kidney. The pathology report came back as stage 3 renal cell carsinoma. My last c-scan showed a number of nodules in both lungs. One of which is about 1/2 inch in size. I have an appointment (2/13) with a cardiothorasic surgeon to set up a date for a wedge resection to get the largest nodule out for a biopsy. I'm sure after recovery the next course of treatment to be suggested; will probably be chemo therapy. I'll cross that brige when I get to it. Almost forgot, I'm a 71 year old male and my general health is good. So far! I don't know anything about the drugs used to treat RCC. So what can I expect with chemo treatment?

    I didn't have chemo, so I can't offer anything to you in that regard, but I just wanted to say I will say prayers for you. I'm sorry you had to join this "club", but there are so many great people here to talk with and ask questions of. Take care.

    If I end up on chemo; I'll let you know how much fun I'm having. Kidding aside; I'll keep you posted on my progress.

    Sorry to hear about your dx for RCC,I have Not needed drug therapy up to this point since my cancer was caught in an earlier stage,but this much I do know,RCC is resistant to chemo treatments ,but there are other drugs that are effective in the fight against this disease,so I wish you only the best and my prayers go out to you.

    Limelife is right about chemo vs. drug therapy as far as I know. I have no personal experience either, but some of the drugs used are IL2 (Interlukin), Votrient, and Sutent, there may be others. There are also clinical trials that could be of help, foxhd is currently going through one for MDX-1106 which shows promise. My advice would be to seek out an oncologist that specializes in or has a great deal of experience with RCC.

    Where can I find out about these non-chemo drugs that can help in the fight against RCC?
    Also, thanks for you prayers and for reaching out to me. My prayer list is growing; you're included. There is a long list of cancer in my family (father's side). Mostly lung cancer. I'm the first with RCC. Usually, it's good to be 1st at something, but not always.
    I don't know if RCC is hereditary but I pray no one else in my family comes down this disease.

    I'm not looking forward to entering a chemo treatment program. I'll have to decide after my wedge resection and the pathology report comes in. No date yet for the surgery. Probably
    will have a date sometime in late Feb. or early Mar. I have just gotten a new oncologist. This guy is great. He's connected to a hospital with a special unit for kidney cancer and hemotology. You take care and keep the faith.

    Thanks for the advise. I'll track down "Family History" and read it. Chemo treatment has not reached the top of my list, yet. I've watched others go through it; including some family members. It's not pretty to watch. Can't imagine how the recipient feels. For me, all words of encouragement have a healing affect on me. You take care and be healthy.
