in Peritoneal Cancer #1
Anyone on this discussion board on Avastin? It has been dumped in the States for women with ovarian cancer I hear and is about to be in Canada. The side effects were quite something apparently and the chemical was not felt to be worth the effects - in other words, it wasn't doing its job?

    Hi, I have been on Avastin for primary peritoneal cancer for 17 months. It has seemed to work for me.... in the USA they just discontinued use for AVASTIN with pts with ADVANCED breast cancer patients only....and is still being used for other cancers such as colon, kidney, lung, gyn cancers...I have talked to my doctor about this and she likes the drug....they talk of side affects that are serious...so are side affects for taxol and carbo.... It is confusing....but, I have been on Avastin for 17 months and had 4 clear ct scans.... you figure.

    I was on Avastin
    and warned about the risks. However, that was several years ago. I was just told that if I'd had systemic chemo now, the Avastin would not have been included - it has shown no advantage in my tumor type.

    I hear good things
    I am in the u.s. and my onc says avast in will be my next step if the ppc starts getting worse. On a few boards I have heard of women going into remission while on avastin. Good luck!

    Hi Chery, my husband has just finished 8 cycles of avastin and they have just found he has a blood clot in pelvis area, so the side affects are serious.

    Only one out of five
    Only one out of five oncologists recommended Avastin for me--and the one that said I might want to try it repeatedly discussed the possible side effects (arterial clots, stroke, hypertension, bowel perforation & death). He said there was a 3% chance of bowel perforation & 1% of those people die,

    Another oncologist more or less said the dangers outweigh the benefits & that Avastin is given with chemo so you never really know if someone would have gone into remission anyway without it. I know some people are given Avastin AFTER chemo when they are already in remission. Many of the women on the ovarian board talk about how Avastin "was helping at first then stopped working."

    Since I have peritoneal disease & persistant ovarian cancer, I think the risk of bowel perforation is too scary for me to be on Avastin. Even if it is a very small number of people who die from it.

    OK, then, not for me! And I likely wouldn't have the choice now anyways as it is off the market. Thanks!
