Sounds like a good idea:
As long as it is a discussion as to what people did to stay healthy and cancer free and is not taken as medical advise. Its a fine line and I really do not know the answer. I would hate to see someone who was recently diagnosed, going against medical advise in favor of a stranger on a discussion board. Once they have done their homework and can make an informed decision on which treatment route they wish to take reading discussions can be very helpful.
Good luck with this one.

I thought any medical advice questions were supposed to be flagged. I dont know how things work on here to well. Sounds good to me. I can keep it to discussion and opinion. Get it going Raquel.

Nana....
I had asked Greta about that years back, and the answer was
a resounding "NO".
The board is provided by the American Cancer Society, and
the National Cancer Institute, both of which are funded by the
cancer industry, manufacturers, etc.
The board is provided to promote information regarding
chemotherapy and radiation, along with all other mainstream
cancer practices.
It took years to go from not being able to post information
about "alternatives", to what it is today. Emily and Lisa
kept a low profile, but were always subjected to naysayers
and others opposing the thought that there can be another
viable way to fight cancer.
We have come a long, long way since the beginning of this
website, and I'm thankful for that. But I do not think that
having a "special forum" is a great idea.
The information regarding any alternative is best presented in
the context it presently is being provided. Most all "alternatives"
can be used along with chemotherapy, and knowing that can
help more people survive, than stuffing the information on
a back burner forum page.
The latest news from the Oncologists, is that there seems to
be a tremendous movement of cancer patients to the trying
of alternatives to compliment present therapy. Many oncologists
are welcoming this event, and supporting it!
In my opinion, the information regarding any/all alternatives
should remain right where it is. Allowing discussions and
opposing views is as important as the information itself.
You can't learn when you stifle information.
Best wishes to all!

I know semantics matter to
I know semantics matter to some and if it's called complementary as opposed to alternative, it is more acceptable. I for one would love to see this discussion. More complementary therapies are showing up on the websites of the big medical centers. I hope we can read about others journeys for resources for those who are interested.
Thanks for bringing this up.

Yes yes yes... I would very much appreciate this type of information.. Knowing what people have tried and the results..and the ability to ask questions about specifics..I wonder if certain alternative therapies work for only KRAS wild vs KRAS mutated as do the chemo drugs. Those type of questions..The data gathered could be beneficial for many.
We are definitely seeing more "alternative or complementary therapies" at the larger centers. Maybe we are reaching a point where there is cooperation. The ACS recognizes acupuncture as a benefit, doesnt it?0 -
That would be nice
Unfortunately, civility is out of the question...Those who are against alternative treatments would post the same "stuff" over there anyway. There is PLENTY of room to discuss different successful cancer treatments provided people don't act like _ -_ _ _ _ '_*.
THERE IS NO KNOWN CURE FOR CANCER THAT WORKS 100% OF THE TIME FOR EVERYONE.

my thoughts
I agree with what Phil said though, that I'd worry that some of the naysayers would go on that board and still banter back and forth. Back awhile, when all the religious stuff started, csn started a spiritual board. I was excited about that, but it turned out not to be like I had hoped. Nothing against the people who post there now, so please don't take offense if that's you, but I personally was thinking that I'd be able to talk with like minded people who share my same beliefs. As the word spirituality encompasses a lot more than Christianity (which is where I'm at and how I was thinking), there are people there who really just enjoy discussing various religions, debating, etc. That's fine for some people, just not what I was expecting or hoping for.
I'm afraid a board for alternatives may end up with lots of input, but not neccesarily all by people who think the same.
I think as long as it's allowed, discussions about any alternatives should remain here on the main colorectal board. We've obviously had some people disagree with that thought on here, but it seems like the majority of people like it or at least don't mind it, so my vote is to keep those discussions here. It doesn't appear, however, that Greta or anyone from CSN intervened into those discussions in anyway, does it? I wonder what her/their thoughts are on that.

cancer is molecular
I have to agree with Lisa42 that such a board is likely to be much different in makeup and tenor than one might envision.
Since cancer is molecular in nature, keeping the alternatives' results associated with their diagnosis is important, whether vitamins, supplements, TCM or generic drugs like cimetidine.0 -
oh maybe yes and maybe no

Aloha Pete:
I had Denny take Avemar for 6 months after inital diagnosis. I wish he would have continued with it but he said it tasted horrible and he couldn't stand it. Kept giving him the dry heaves when he took it. But he did get 6 months of using it right after his colon surgery. So hopefully it helped one never knows. Now we eat healther and he takes various supplements that I found researching the internet, ones that has/had shown promising results. If anything he has not gotten sick with cold or flu's of any kind by taking the suppliments where as I have so in that aspect I would say the suppliments have helped him from not getting sick with everyday common illnesses.
He does take low dose asprin also daily which his Onc recommended to do.
There is good reviews and research on Avemar, but it is quite an expensive suppliment.
Laurie
Denny stage IIB (T4a,no, no) Diag end Oct 2009
No adjucent therapy by Dennys choice, NED since surgery.

Then I an going to eat some fresh fruit on a bundt cake covered with Whip Cream. I am then going to take a healthful nap, but first I am going to have my aloe, with a bit of tequila because it taste better....
What ever that is about...LMAO
I just want others to be able to share their thoughts and ideas without being ridiculed or told that they are a witch and should be burned at Steak (stake)!....
Chat with you all later. I an off to cook some dinner and put my feet up.0 -

That's actually how I live my life! I haven't given up my little pleasures, like candy and cocktails, but I always try to balance it out with a decent diet, some supplements, a little exercise, etc. May not increase my longevity, but I'm enjoying life along the way! Happy holidays, Ann0 -

just joking.
when did having a healthy diet become alternative anyway ?
just asking.
i liked all the answers,
yes we get into arguments, but thats life.
now how we cope with the differences of opinion, thats a whole separate post.
i would say with kindness and respect.
one of these alternatives might help some attain better health, in that context leaving them on our little board is good for us crc's
