Right Kidney Removal - Cancer

in Kidney Cancer #1
I had my right kidney removed February 14th this year (2011) due to kidney cancer (Stage 3). It took me along time to recover from the operation but I was back at work within 4 weeks. Walking (gradually more ever day or 2) helped me alot and keeping my water intake up as well. I had a large bulge appear about 3-4 months after the operation just above where my kidney used to be. My surgeon said it a hernia and will need surgery to remove it. This was caused by over exertion before the healing was not finished. I am a Tenor tuba player and use my diaphragm alot and went back to it to early I was told. I still have the bulge but no pain so far. I will be going in for my 2nd appointment (I was cleared on my first) in about 1 more month or 2 and are hoping for more good news. I was also told I will have to have my gall bladder removed but this is because of too many stones and not for cancer (just another operation sheesh).

    Hernia after surgery
    I had a partial done back in 12/09 and it also became herniated from shoveling snow. My Urologist said I would eventually have to get it taken care of, but it was not serious or an emergency. Several months later I saw a General Surgeon for a different problem and asked him about hernia. He said I really don't have to do anything as long as it doesn't get worse. By worse he meant that it gets hard to the touch or starts to be painful. It has now been 2 years and it hasn't bothered me at all, and at my age i wasn't planning on wearing a "Speedo" anymore so the bulge doesn't bother me. Although every now and then I get a "Numb" feeling there he said that was normal.

    Gallbladder is easy peasy...
    at least compared to what you've already been through. 99% of the time you can do the gallbladder with an outpatient lap procedure. I bet you'll think it's a piece of cake and wish you a speedy recovery.

    Yeah, don't sweat the gallbladder its a couple days of minor discomfort as long as all goes as planned. It seems like a lot of us rcc survivors have lost our gallbladders too, anybody else out there curious about that?

    gall bladder
    I don't see the connection with kidney cancer, but who knows? The CT for my gall bladder also noted the cancer. Had the gall bladder taken out along with the kidney. The gallstone was pretty big and the gall bladder was badly infected. The doctor was surprised that I hadn't experienced more pain than I did.

    Thank you for your reply. The hernia has not become a problem and I am still to see my surgeon or local GP again. I will be seeing my local GP on the 16th of this month and will discuss this with him at that time. I will also be discussing with him in regards to my gall bladder and if he thinks it really needs to be removed. I am still well but I am getting tired still. As for the speedo's I don't think I will be venturing into those for awhile lol. Need to loose weight.

    Your comment is very reassuring in regards to the op. I will be seeing my GP this month (16th) in whether he thinks it really needs to be removed. I have been told I have a cluster of about 20 small stone and a few larger ones. So we will have to wait and see. Once again thank you.

    gall bladder
    4 or 5 years ago I had to have my Gall bladder removed. Within a couple weeks I was off on a motorcycle trip for a week and a half. I did it as a day surgery. They were hesitant to d/c me home but agreed to it. Once again, the recliner is a great thing to have available. The first day is painful. So, I took my meds and sat at a desk and built a puzzle. It really helped pass the time.
