Hey guy's, this really sucks, my mother-in-law who is a young 77, has just been diagnosed with bladder cancer. She is scheduled for out patient surgery tomorrow, where they will see if they can get the tumor out. I guess then they stage it, and advise treatment. I was on this sites bladder cancer discussion board and it seems there is not a lot on activity. Thanks for the ear.............. Vinny

    So sorry to hear about your mom in law. Hopefully they can get the tumor out without more surgery and get it all.

    Years ago my sister had advanced bladder cancer and had to have radical surgery for it. Even with all of that cancer she did not require any tx after the surgery and did not have a re-occurance- so that can happen!!

    That does really suck. I have been on the bladder site a few times awhile back because I have a cousin that was diagnosed with it a couple of years ago. I do not know much about it because he is kinda closed mouth. He never mentioned any radiation as part of his treatment.He told me of some of the proceedures he had done. He is doing fine now. I wish I knew more to relay to you.I know this does not tell you a lot,just thought I would share it.It just never stops does it? Keep us informed of what is going on with her. John

    Dear Vinnie,

    I am so sorry to hear about your mother-in-law.

    My uncle had bladder cancer back in 1982. I can't tell you what stage he was. He was treated
    at Cornell Medical Center, and Sloan Kettering Cancer Hospital in NYC. Cornell and Sloan Kettering are almost just across the street from each other. His surgeon told him he would have radiation first, then he would be operated on. I believe the reason for this was the radiation would make scar tissue all around the cancer. Therefore, when they would operate, no cancer would escape to other area's of the body. He had the radiation at Sloan Kettering, then operated at Cornell. The surgery was brutal. I remember visiting him in the hospital after the surgery. He lay there with all kinds of tubes from everywhere.

    The outcome was success. He only had one complication. The radiation did burn his abdomen. He was leaking fluid for about one week. May I say, he is still with us, and living a wonderful life with his family. Even though after the operation he looked scary, in about 5 days he was almost normal. He did have to stay an extra week because of the leakage.

    Yu have to remember this is back in 1982. I have no idea what the treatment is now.

    I know I haven't posted recently. I wish you, your family, and everyone on this site, and their family a wonderful holiday. I pray everyone for the coming year 2012, and healthy and promising outcome of their DX.

    Hi Vinny

    So very sorry to hear about your MIL. I will be thinking only positive thoughts that she sails through surgery and that she has caught this in an early stage.

    My mom had bladder ca at 78 and then again at 80. She just turned 90 in Nov. She also is a breast ca survivor. She has had no more cancer, just old age issues.

    Aside from this tough news, I hope you are doing well.

    Wishing you and Lisa a very Merry Christmas and a Healthy New Year ahead.

    Thanks for all the comments and well wishes, it helps a lot. She had the surgery yesterday, and the doctor thinks they got it all. The surgeon was surprised to see how big the tumor was. Because of the holidays, they will not be able to stage it for two weeks......ahh the waiting game. Hopefully she is at stage 0 to 1, in that case chemo could be directed right at the bladder, we will see. Thanks again everyone, Merry Christmas to all, and have a safe New Year!
