MRI

Have not been on here for awhile, my husband Steve is doing very well, he is 7 months post treatment. Two weeks ago he did a complete turn around. He can taste he has gained 10lbs, his energy level is up, and his chemo doc says he is doing great, and he does not see this cancer (HPV tonsil one node involved) coming back. My question is about his rad doc. They took a pet scan in Sept, it showed some hot spots, so they took a cat scan and it was clear, now he has ordered a MRI (which he is having at 6:30 tonight, is this normal? why MRI if cat scan came back normal, anyone else have this done? Hope all is well with everyone and sorry have not been on for awhile, but been busy.

    Hi Linda
When I do PET scans my doctor would always do an MRI as well because I had so many hot spots show up on the PET scan. I believe the MRI gives them a better idea of the area in question. The PET scan in my case showed a hot spot but the MRI showed nothing there.

Hope this helps. Someone else might be able to explain it better.

    Thank You
Thanks Hondo, I was just wondering why he wanted to do the MRI after cat scan showed clear, maybe just a routine thing. Take care we are going out the door right now to have that done, will keep posted of results

Linda, one of my Docs said the MRI gave greater detail than a PET scan. And, an MRI scan does not use any radiation. If your husband has not had one of these before, be sure the earplugs they give him are seated very well in the ear canals. I also had them place small pillows over my ears. Yes, this test is loud. It freaked me out the first time since my earplugs were not seated well and I made them abort the test. The second time, I had adequate ear protection (and an Ativan) and I got through it just fine.

    Linda,

I had an MRI to confirm if the hot spot showing on my PET/CT scan was indeed cancer or not. I was under the impression they usually do the PET and CT scan concurrently? Perhaps they are just confirming the good news on the CT scan results. Better safe than sorry you know.

Hoping for a clean report from the MRI for you and Steve. Glad to hear of Steve's dramatic improvement. Cheers.
