Results for Cat scan this morning

Hello everyone,

First of all I want to thank you very much. I will never thank you enough. I know I still have lots to learn from you guys :). You are the best teachers :)

The whole thing is pretty good considering. The scan results were cleared......no other tumor. I am so happy about this and her too.

She is getting another operation in January to remove more of what was around the initial tumor. Something like 2 cms by 4 cms around the initial incision and 1 cm deeper.
It will be a bigger operation. She might not need chemo or radiation the doctor said (he is not sure yet).....it will depend on the test results after the operation. They will see if she has any cancer cells left after testings.

I took notes like you all said so I might have questions later?

Basically, it looks pretty good. She is worried about her speech after the operation but the doctor said it will come back to normal after a couple of weeks. She will be off of work for about 2 months. Less if it goes well.
The only thing is that he might not be able to spare her lingual nerve......he might, he might not.....he can't tell yet.
She is also worried about numbness on the side of the tongue that would be permanent I believe. We shall find out after the operation.

Thank you again for your thoughts and prayers.
It helped a lot.

She is not done with the worries but at least it looks pretty good about the cancer cells. She is at the stage 1 (primary cancer) which is good considering. Tumor was 1 cm not 2 like I thought. And he said it was Squamous something...I have to look at my notes.
She went on time the doctor said.......yahooo for this.

Have a nice evening my friends. Sue :)

    Hi Sue
Wow great news I love hearing about clean reports. Just keep positive and keep giving support you will both look back on this someday as just a path in life that you had to both take.

    Lingual nerve
I lost the left lingual nerve in last year's surgery. It is a bit of a problem adjusting, but it can be done. Now I chew mostly on the right side, and I barely notice it. Under the circumstances this is good news. Carry on, one step at a time.

    Squamous Cell Carcinoma
Well, if it's "only" stage I and ends up not requiring chemo and rads, that is terrific. I had SCC stage IV unknown primary, mets to lymph nodes. At least you know what is going on and you guys have got a plan of attack. This is good.

    Just Surgery
Hi Sue...I definitely don't wanna come off negative or ruin the party. But having had STGIII SCC Tonsils and HPV+, I'm just a little paranoid.

Can't remember if she was tested (biopsy) for HPV or not.

But, have you had any additional opinions on options for treatment? Just meaning that I wonder if another MD would feel that only surgery was warranted.

I'd never want anyone to go through chemo and rads, but at the same time I'd want to have as best shot as ever to not have anything recur somewhere down the road if I hadn't been treated enough up front.

Again, I'm sorry and don't want to put doubt out there for you. I am in no way a medical professional nor have any ideas on treatment. I'm speaking purely as someone that went through treatment.

If you completely have faith in your MD's and trust their decisions that's enough for sure.

    Best,
    John

    Biopsy
Hi John. Good question you have about treatment.

Yes she had a biopsy done and the results is oral cancer.
I am sure she doesn't have the HPV virus.
She is an ex smoker. We both quit together a few years ago.

Maybe the doctor is not sure about the radiation or chemo because her tumor was only 1 cm?
    Not sure why John.

I think she has faith in her doctor. I would be the type to go for a second opinion but she is not. I talked to her about it and she said she felt ok with this doctor.
    I tried :)

Tks for your input. I appreciate it. Sue

    Hi Sue

I had faith in my first Radiation Doctor till my C came back and I found out I was his first case of NPC cancer and he did not know how to treat it the right way. Get the second opinion it is worth it, if you need have her talk to me.

Now my first question to a new doctor is how many people with NPC cancer have you treated before.

Wishing you both all the best

    Tks Hondo
Ok I will tell her to talk to you if she feels she needs to Hondo. She doesn't like to ''disturb'' people she says.

Tks for the offer. Very appreciated. Sue

    Hi Sue
God spared my life just to help other people, so she will never disturb me even if she called at 2am I believe that is my mission and will talk to anyone any time about cancer. I don’t want anyone to go through what I went through fighting this stuff a second time.

Will PM you my number just in case she wants to call.

    Wishing you both well

    Fish Are Biting
    What's your number.....

Just incase the fish are biting and I'm going at 5:30 AM. I might need to call you at 2:00AM (the day before) so you'll have a head start for meeting at the ramp....LOL.
