Astragalus or Curcumin

Hi John
Astragalus is one of many Traditional Chinese Medicines used to help keep the body’s immune systems strong. Astragaus is called an adaptogen, meaning it is thought to help protect the body against various stresses, including physical, mental, or emotional stress. In the United States, researchers have looked at astragalus as a possible treatment for people whose immune systems have been weakened by chemotherapy or radiation. In these studies, astragalus supplements seem to help people recover faster and live longer.

Have you ever tried it? It appears to have potential and the Chinese are not killing rhinos for it. Personally I am skeptical of herbal remedies but there are probably some good ones.0 -
Polenectar
My dad is retired family doctor who also practiced alternative medicine, acupuncture, etc.
He gave me this to use, but not until rad effects are over. I was told not to take antioxidants as it works against cancer treatment, so I'll start taking it in 2012 for it's immune boosting, etc.

I have not taken this one but I do take a lot of other herbals medicines that help me from getting sick. Last year a lot of people at the office all had the flu but somehow I never got sick. I am not saying it was the herbals meds but what every it was I am going to keep doing it this year as well. Herbals medicines have been used for thousands of years and many of them work just as well today.
Take care my friend

There is quite about written about this even by the U of Maryland and Sloan-Kettering. They stop short of endorsing it but the fact they even acknowledge it exists is a positive.

Curcumin
This is suppose to have benefits for SCCHN but the problem is getting enough orally to make a difference.

Isn't that in turmeric? Just in general, my RO recommended turmeric to me, when my mouth was still very bad. I have heard of many benefits for turmeric.0 -

It is the condensed form of turmeric. If anyone decides to try it be sure to get a product that has peperine as an additive because that slows the absorption and makes it work.0 -
Keep Saying I'll Start
Keep not doing it. During treatment, I tried a little pile of turmeric. UGH. I've read the best way to take it is with black pepper and oil, and that it's very difficult to get in the required daily amount with just curry and mustard, so supplements are recommended. Curcumin (in the turmeric) is touted as being a magnificent food - fights cancers, arthritis, inflammation of skin and body, infection, obesity - boosts immunity and has other benefits. Wow - just read that folks with gallstones should not use curcumin - wonder why. I have a gallstone.0 -

I have been reading about this and suffice it to say that there are some big differences in products. The high potency stuff is the extract at 95%. Some of the cheaper products say turmeric or even curcumin but they are little more than the spice variety and very low potency. The root itself is curcuma longa and turmeric is the dryed and ground spice that is made from it but the good stuff takes the ground spice and chemically reduces it down to about 18x the potency. It also should have something like peperine as an additive to slow down the absorption. Now I need to find a good deal.0
