New Dry Mouth Product

I went for a dental cleaning this week, and the dental hygienist recommended a new product she had recently discovered at a dental conference.

It is called "Oramoist", and it is a "patch" only 1/2" in diameter and 1/8th inch thick. It is pressed against the roof of the mouth, about half way along the palette. You hold it there for about 10 seconds and I guarantee it will stick.
xylitol

While there it releases xylitol (?, didn't look it up), and enzymes. No sugar, or alcohol, so might work with tender mouths.

It disolves slowly over 2-4 hours, releasing the ingredients that moisten the mouth.

I tried it, and I already have a lot of saliva back, but I could feel an increase. The people who really need it are those of you at an earlier stage of healing with little or no saliva (and Sweet).

I don't know how it will work for you, but it's over the counter, sounds harmless when I read through the full ingredient list, and is worth a try. It is new, and is available at Walgreens.

    Had my 4th and last chemo today. See the nuclear guy tomorrow for treatment planning, will start in a couple of weeks. Preparing for another go at this. I remember getting dry very quickly the first time I went through radiation. I was surprised to already be dry in a week.

    Thank you, I will try it and let you know how I do. I am not as dry as Sweet but by the afternoon I am starting to get lips glued together--not something I need with Kindergarteners! I have problems with xylitol, hopefully there is not too much in it. I tried something that was recommended by the hygienist but it was gritty after a few hours, and didn't seem to help with dryness that much.

    I tried it back in February, maybe? It was quite a while ago. It was kind of pucker-y to me, and it has to go on my cheek, so it doesn't touch my tongue and aggravate it. It also made me have white, nasty, clumpy stuff in my mouth. It didn't really work for me, unfortunately. :(

    I tried it myself a couple of months ago hoping I could get some sleep without waking up with a paper dry throat. I can't say it didn't do anything, but what it did do was produce something very thick and sticky. I also found it quite distracting, kind of like baiting me to aggravate my tongue trying to pry it loose.

    I have a coupon for it - had never heard of it, though. Did you all find it at chain drugstores? I'm doing well, but am wondering if I could use it at night.

    Sorry to hear that Sweet. I was thinking about you as the gal told me about it. Yes, I had the white clumpy stuff from it also. I didn't know if it was me, the patch or what, but I figure if it does some good for the profoundly dry, then it would be worth putting up with the bit of shedding it does.

    Glad it wasn't just me that had the white clumpy stuff. That makes me feel a little better. Lol

    I am trying to find Oasis rinse, again. So far, I've found it to work better than the Bioténe rinse. I found the Oasis once, and have never seen it again. The Act Total Care is ok, and it has fluoride, but not as good on the dry mouth as the Oasis. The later seems to last about an hour for me, if I keep my mouth closed, and I'm not talking.

    I got both the oasis mouthwash and the tabs at Walgreens but never seen either at the CVS across the street. If you don't have a Walgreens in your area I think you can order it online. Personally I found all those products somewhat lacking. The first person to invent a mouthpiece that fits over the teeth and releases saline solution over night is going to make a mint. I would pay a ridiculous price for something like that.

    No Walgreens by me. I'd have to order it. I was trying to avoid that, but will probably end up doing so. Honestly, I find it all lacking with as dry as my mouth is. The Oasis, is just less lacking. ;-)

    There was some guy on here once that talked about a pump or something that puts moisture into your mouth, ive seen him post on the HNC page on facebook, too. I can picture his profile picture, but his name and what the device is called, I cannot think of at the moment.

    I know what you mean when it comes to less lacking. My big problem is when I sleep and everything dries out before I wake up. I can't talk or swallow without it going straight to my lungs causing a PEG ripping coughing fit to start my day.

    Thanks for the info Hal.....I found my mouth is only dry at night, I wake up every hour to hour and a half to wet my mouth, it is a pain, since I have started back to work and have to get up early in the morning. I havent had a full nights sleep in months, anything I can find to help is welcome. I have tried the Biotene, but found it makes me sick in the morning...also bought the ACT mouth rinse, and it did nothing.

    Speaking of Dry Mouth
    I've been carrying around a container of water with me for 3 years now. This morning I started out on my every other day 3.1 mile run, and realized about 1/4 of the way through that I had forgotten my water. I made it without it, but ran my fasted time within the last two months. Guess I really don't need it after all.

    Jerky Tongue....
    Get used to it, several of us have Jerky Tongue at night it seems...

    Unfortunately for me, my two Chocolate Lab sisters Kali and Jazzy, think they have to go out for a pee everytime I need to swig water....makes for a very long night, and usually tired morning.

    sounds like i have the same sleeping pattern as you. i am currently using biotene rinse, and jell afterwards to sleep sometimes it can give me 2 to 3 hours of sleep. i guess depends on how tired i am. another survivor suggest i try xylimelts it helps her sleep longer. i have ordered it on line and as soon as i try it i will post it my result for anyone who is interested. after i order on line, i found costco pharmacy can order for you
    for alot less money. until we can stop the dry mouth we will not have a full night sleep for awhile.

    have you tried using biotene jell after the rinse. i found it helps me until i try xylimelts in a couple of weeks. thanks for the heads up about the white stuff. do you have a costco pharmacy in your area? they maybe able to order your oasis and maybe a lot less $.
