This was on Dr Oz website and thought I'd pass it to everyone once more. Most of these foods are listed in our famous ANTI-CANCER book. Amazingly, I eat most of these foods at least once per day...pat myself on the back for doing all my research...lol.

Cancer and Superfoods

What IS a Superfood? A Superfood is the newest name scientists, nutritionists, and doctors have tagged onto foods with an especially “good for you” reputation! Most superfoods are in the fruits, vegetables, and nuts/seeds categories. They have extremely high nutritional values, and some of their chemicals have been found to reduce the effect of certain disease processes.



Do Superfoods really help prevent cancer? It gives me great pleasure tell you that many superfoods do indeed prevent cancer.


Here is a list of some of the top superfoods and how they affect cancer in humans:

* Berries and red grapes – We're talking almost any berry that is red or blue. Blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, acai berries, gogi berries...they contain phytochemicals that destroy cancer cells both in culture form and in the liver.
* Green Tea – The catechins (EGCG) in green tea have anti-cancer properties that prevent and reduce breast and other cancers.
* Flaxseed – Contains lignins that have cancer-fighting properties.
* Garlic, Onions, Leeks – Just about any part of the allium family has been shown to reduce various types of cancers including stomach and colorectal cancer, prostate and breast cancers, as well as a number of other common cancers.
* Broccoli, Broccoli Sprouts, Cruciferous vegetables – Men who eat broccoli 4 times a week have proven that their prostate cancer diminishes. Similar effects have been found when cabbage, cauliflower, and brussel sprouts are eaten. Of note, broccoli sprouts have been shown to demonstrate 20 times the cancer fighting properties of plain broccoli!
* Tomatoes – Lycopene is the key ingredient in tomatoes and its benefits are even greater when tomatoes are cooked, so pasta sauces, pizza sauces, etc. are especially good. Studies have identified progress in the areas of prostate, breast, lung, and colon cancer. The FDA is currently disputing these studies (all 72 of them), but most experts believe that the FDA's study is flawed.
* Resveratrol found in red wine – Let's hear it for red wine. Resveratrol has been shown to have very powerful cancer-fighting properties which suppresses the abnormal cell growth that leads to many kinds of breast cancer. Resveratrol acts to block the action of estrogen, which is largely responsible for breast cancer. Early studies in lab mice show similar results in prostate cancer. One glass a day should do it.
* Watercress, Spinach, Kale – Watercress consumption protects against the kind of DNA damage that leads to tumor formation. Chlorophyllin in spinach and kale has been proven to reduce the risk of liver cancer.
* Tumeric – This yellow spice found mainly in Indian curries is curcumin that is considered to be a very powerful antioxidant. It has been proven to prevent and slow tumor growth, and it only takes about 1 teaspoon a day to have an effect. Try adding this to dressings, soups, and your main dishes. A word of warning, if you already have cancer, talk to your doctor before adding tumeric to your diet as it can make your anti-cancer drugs less effective.

    keep it simple
    You can make a salad sprinked with whole or ground flax seed with a garlic tumeric dressing and a side dish of fruit and a glass of redwine or sparkling juice .

    Sounds doable to me!

    I caught a tv clip today while waitng for my vehical inspection. Today at 4pm Dr. Oz was going to reveal a test for cancer that could save our lives and it had to do with a pencil.

    Got my brain wondering . Could it be a urine test? I wasn't able to watch it had to work.

    I love salad that consists of watercress and almost anything else. Watercress seems to have a short shelf life so I usually do not add other greens except for sprouts. I heard that watercress is the new arugula! LOL

    Don't forget - if you have gallstones - and many people who have them do not know — do not use turmeric. I believe it is also contraindicated if you are using blood thinners.

    WHERE to find broccoli sprouts?

    I keep seeing references to how powerful brocoli sprouts are--but although I live in a metropolitan area, near two Whole Foods, moreover, I never see them. Are they bagged and found next to cut cabbage? Where do you all find them?

    I looked into this a year ago . Look for the broccoli seeds and sprout your own. I do not know If whoe foods has them. I found them in a non chain health food store. in a small bag . they were quite pricey. I spoke with a man who bought a very large amount some how. He grows hydroponic organic greens for retail and wholesale .

    MAKES SENSE--BUT SHRIMP? REALLY? SHELLFISH AT ALL?


    We all want to prevent cancer cells from replicating, but while I've read of the benefits of celery and bok choy, thought I'd read that we cancer survivors should avoid shellfish at all cost.

    May I ask where you read that shrimp can be helpful?

    I read same thing about shrimp okay to eat. Now have to go back and look up where I found this information.

    One thing I follow is a link for best type fish with less mercury, etc.

    What do you all think about STEVIA?
    I do not use any kink of sweetener, but I am looking for a protein power and found one that has stevia: THE ULTIMATE MEAL.
    There is another power named ORGANIC RICE PROTEIN, and this does not have any sweeteners.
    Has anyone heard of any of the two?

    I have a friend who purchased a sprouter from Amazon.
    I saw it, and it look fun.
    She told me she grows her own, and that is not work at all.
    She also told me you can buy organic seed of all kinds online, maybe broccoli.
    I just saw some called BROCCOLI AND FRIENDS.

    My nutritionist (who is breast cancer survivor) suggested to avoid any of these. Told her I use Stevia in my iced green tea once per day and she said in minimal doses it truly won't hurt us. She was more concerned if used in cooking, etc, such as many do with Agave. This is what I know as many others may have different opinions.

    I tend to eat a lot of fruit so get my sweetness fix from these yummies. If I were in your shoes, I'd avoid this product. Have you ever gone to Whole Foods and looked at their protein section? I did yesterday and yes they have a few whey proteins which are "organic", but many have sugar type sweetener, such as cane sugars.

    I know you've been trying to find the perfect one for you...I'd be curious what you find as the one I use has been out of stock for weeks

    According to Dr. Mercola, his recommended protein powders are free of sugar and artificial sweeteners.

    I am assuming the sugar comes from the rice, but I am not quiet sure.
    I am also thinking brown rice is inflammatory, so I can drink it with homemade almond milk which is anti-inflammatory.

    WHEY PROTEIN POWDERS

    Take whey shake every morning, and for awhile I was using Mercola's--which at least comes from organic milk and is, overall, a high quality product. Ordered it in chocolate as well as vanilla and banana--and the chocolate was wonderfully tasty, especially with really cold water and a banana in it.

    HOWEVER: Close scrutiny of the ingredients still showed 2-5 mgs of SUGAR in Mercola's miracle whey. It may be "natural" sugar inherent in the product (for I didn't see cane sugar listed), but it still made me wary.

    With more research, I saw that the brand of whey protein recommended by the nutritionist who long treated Dr. David Servan Schreiber is Whey Cool: a silly name but topnotch product with NO sugar whatsoever. I ordered it in "plain" and can't pretend it's quite as tasty as Mercola's--but it's fine with a banana in it. Forget whether it comes in flavors or not.

    Bottom line: Neither Mercola's nor Whey Cool are cheap. Believe I spent 50-60 dollars on one very large cannister of each. Lasted me two months, perhaps.

    But I can tell the difference when I've had whey protein at start of day. Schreiber's doctor recommends it in the morning especially to raise hemoglobin, by the way.

    Please let me know if you find a yet better product, but these two brands seem by far the best to me.

    Thanks for the update on product....WHEY COOL. Did quickly look but don't see any ingredients listed..have to do some more researching.

    I've had my nutritionist and good friend suggest a product called WHEY TO HEALTH...organic, no sugars,not artificial anything....has small amount of sugar listed in nutrional breakdown but that's just part of the whey. Only 1 ingredient...ORGANIC WHEY!!

    The problem now, the 2 distributors (0n-line) I'm purchasing from have been out of stock for over 2 weeks...yikes! No word on when it'll be filled. You'll find anything with "whey" is very expensive....hubbie and I have been on whey products for over 20 years. The product we were originally on I purchased at Sam's Club and has tons of artificial ingredients and lots of sugar, but still expensive due to whey.

    We want whey as it's "highly digestible" so our bodies absorb it and use it, whereas, many other type of proteins don't digest properly or at all, therefore, end up in sewage not our bodies. The latter we might as well just not bother taking. So...look for WHEY!! Lastly, there's good and bad whey, so my suggestion, look for products with whey and not isolate types.

    As my nutritionist told me, whenever purchasing food products, etc, the least amount of ingredients, the better the product....generally!!!

    I'll start looking at different products as don't like not having my regular whey product. Fayard suggested a few as well...but one I notice uses brown rice...not sure if highly digestible.
