Swallow study results
My dad just had a swallow study today and the therapist said the water did not aspirate into the lungs which is good. His muscles are weak and he is a little anxious about eating..however she said his esphogus is curved. When the liquid goes down it goes down anterior? I am still awaiting the actual report I am just repeating what she told us. Has anyone ever heard or experienced this? Dad is 6 weeks out of treatment.
Thanks for the help
Hope all is well
Michelle

This sounds like a good report
Not knowing exactly what your dad had done, my swallowing studies were not "normal" even two years after a radical neck dissection and irradiation. I had reflux which showed on the swallowing as a reverse wave, and an angulation caused by the surgery. Some of the foods they coated with barium and had me swallow kind of stuck and didn't go down properly. Duh, I already knew that! And this was two years after treatment.
It doesn't strike me that curvature is, in and of itself, important. The important thing is lack of obstruction, and the fact that things pass through. This bodes well for recovery. BTW, my problems eventually disappeared. But even two years was not enough time to get there.

Yes that sounds about the same. The applesauce, banana water and cookie were with barium in them. And yes no obstruction is key . I'm glad to hear your problems disappeared. Two days for us is too long. Haha

They barium coated some bacon for me. Proving your swallower is pretty smart, my mouth somehow separated out the fat from the meat. The fat went down just fine; the meat stuck. Pretty neat.0
