Need advice on symptoms

in Colorectal Cancer #1
Hello everyone and hope you all are having a good week! My husband had his liver resection on Wednesday and recovery has been hard. We are still in the hospital and he is still having lots of pain. The pain is so bad now he can not walk or eat. He has been up to walk seceral times a day but has worse pain today. They won't lye you home until your bowels wake up but how do you do that with all the pain meds? Today he is worse than yesterday and we are waiting for a doctor to look at him. It seems to take forever around here. Meanwhile he is not walking and can't inhale in that contraption atnall. it is beginning to feel kie we will be here forever....Any advice for getting out of here? Hugs to everyone. Teri

    Sorry to hear that your husband is so much pain. They gave me laxatives and finally a suppositor. That helped and then my body took over.

    Sorry to hear he's having such a hard time. I was given some form of I.V. to get my bowels going after my colon resection, it was horrible, non-stop running to the bathroom once that kicked in, they wanted to give me another round of it, and I refused as I was going waaaayyy too much on that stuff (I don't recall what it was called). If he's in a lot of pain he will not want to be up and down to the washroom every few minutes.

    Try to get him to chew gum...I have heard that it will help with the bowel wake up.

    I had trouble with eating the hospital food myself...a lot has to do with the pain meds. Check with the doc and see if you can bring in food from outside to perhaps tempt him with something you know he likes.

    Also check with the doc about changing his pain meds to see if he can get some relief. First round for me was morphine pump. Second time delauded.

    Hope he is soon on the mend and home to your good care.

    Walk?

    Less than a week post-op and they want him to walk?
    (Did you speak to the surgeon about this?)

    It takes -time- to heal, and it can a -long time- for the intestines
    to "wake up"!

    We all were in a rush to get the hell out of the hospital after
    surgery, but going home while there's still serious problems
    (like possible ileus), isn't too great an idea. You'll only be
    rushed, via a 911 call, back to the emergency room...

    Talk to the surgeon and let him make some decisions.

    Your OM needs some attention, not the exit.

    Oh my goodness, my bowels didn't wake up for a week and that was a very limited bowel movement. My bowel had no desire of waking up and caused me much pain. Cried and cried because I'd been hurting for days and no one wanted to address the issue, having crocodile tears and raising my voice got some action, but not much. It took me months to get this awful pain away. Walk, walk, walk, that is what helped me the most. Hope he feels better soon.

    Just frustrated with unresolved pain
    Thanks for the ideas. I will try the gum and better food tomorrow. I think we were both expecting each day to be better. They actually had him walking with a walker the day after his surgery...but today the pain was too much for him and he couldn't do it. He says his back is hurting by his kidneys.     I recently had surgery (a different one) and also had difficulty with pain control. In addition to the pain pump, I was receiving shots into my IV. They tried switching around between fentanyl and morphine in the pump along with the shots. I had a very hard time getting up and moving. Eventually the oral percoset worked a little after a few days. Your husband is going to have to walk to get the bowel going. This was a challenge for me but I ended up with an ileus so walking became extremely important. At this point, my pain wasn't as bad so I quit taking meds to get the bowels going and walked every hour. I'm still having pain three weeks out so I have taken some meds at night to sleep.
    Will the doctors experiment with some different med combos for your husband to get the pain under control? Then he can get up and move again? Hopefully movement might help the pain too as things get moving in the body. Then less meds, more bowel action. It is a lot of experimentation. I'm thinking of you. Good luck and I hope there is relief for your husband soon.
