MRI guided biopsy

Hello, has anyone had this procedure? How painful is it, do they give you anything to relax you, and about how long did the procedure take? Thanks, Linny

    I didn't have a MRI guided
    I didn't have a MRI guided biopsy. I had an ultrasound guided biopsy Linny. It wasn't painful. They gave me a shot to numb the area, so, all I felt was a little prick of the needle. I had been given a nerve pill to calm me and I took it ahead of time.

    I don't know if a guided MRI is similar or not. I have had MRI's, but, nor for a biopsy.

    I hope someone on the site can help you better.

    Same here...
    I've had two ultrasound guided biopsies...one for my breast in 2009 and one this past June on my neck, clavicle lymph node that confirmed a recurrence.....the breast biopsy, even though it was numbed first, was still uncomfortable...the one on my neck was a piece of cake as I was given conscious sedation....I felt only a small stick..no pain what so ever! ..... I had a breast MRI With contrast dye but not for a biopsy....hopefully someone will chime in who's had it...I will say, tell them you WANT some type of mild sedation....if given, you will need someone to drive you home.

    My experience was the same
    My experience was the same as Lex's. And, I have also had the contrast dye MRI's. I get one, once a year, and, had one right after I was diagnosed, before surgery.

    Some pink sister I am sure has had what you asked about and will post.

    I also had a ultra sound biopsy in Aug of this year and July of 2009.I didn't take anything before the biospy but was numbed and had titanium chip put in where the tumor was.This Aug I had 4 biopsies from the one tumor.I felt nothing.Not even the numbing shot.When they were ready to take a piece they told me.Just a slight noise.They also told me I would feel a clamping. That didn't bother me either. This tumor was so small like the malignant tumor in 2009 and thankfully was benign.

    I hope someone can halp you.Looks like most of us had a ultrasound biopsy.

    Wishing good results from the biopsy you will have soon.

    I had the ultrasound guided core biopsy too and they also put the titanium chip in me to mark where the tumor was for surgery. I got the numbing shot and just barely felt the needle. Praying that you will get benign results.

    I wondered
    Jan,I wondered when they take our tumors out does the titanium chip stay in place. Do they keep it there to let them know where the cancer originated. Honestly I keep forgetting to ask my doctor.

    With 2 doctors both seem to think the benign can stay.No need to rush a lumpectomy.
    It was a fibroid tumor.I know I have that chip still but wondered about my first chip.

    I learn so mcuh here and since I do community service work I meet many who have cancer or know of a famuly member or friend who has it.I learn alot from those people too.And a couple friends and niece. As a doctor said to me"We are all different and I see that now after my dx".

    I don't know about everyone Lynn, but, when I had my lumpectomy, they also removed the titanium marker as it was right next to the tumor and my breast surgeon took it when he went to get clear margins. So, mine is gone. At first I thought, what a waste of money lol but I realize my breast surgeon needed it to find my tumor.

    If it turns out you don't have bc, then I would think they would leave the marker in there, so that they are aware that there is/was something there, so they can keep an extra eye on that area.

    Hi,
    I had a MRI guided biopsy. It's not bad at all. The only thing is that you are laying face down with your breast positioned in an opening. They will take a couple of pictures before, find the spot, compress the breast (not bad though), inject the dye through your iv, take a couple more pictures and then do the biopsy. They will numb you up just like they do for the ultra sound guided one.

    They put earplugs in my ears and I asked to have one taken out when they were in the room doing the procedure so that I could ask questions and here what they were saying.

    I worried about it until I got there, I had no idea what it would be like! The unknown is always the hardest to deal with.

    Just What I thought.They remove the titanium chips.I always wondered but when I get in to see the doctor I would forget to ask.So the cancer titanum chip is gone but since they marked the benign tumor that was found recently that chip will stay. At least till they take that tumor out.For now they said it can be left alone.They have the chip to guide them when they do my mammos.That way they won't think I have a new tumor. My next appt is mid January. I hope nothing else pops up.

    Lynn, my titanium chip was
    Lynn, my titanium chip was also removed during my lumpectomy. Praying you get good news next month!

    Linny--I had to have the MRI guided biopsy
    because my cancer was very deep--right up against the chest wall and my surgeon could not get a good image on ultrasound. I had it done by the radiologist. I was given something to calm my nerves, but they gave it to me as I was walking into the room so it really didn't work very well. I was put face down on a table with my breasts in two openings. They took a couple of images like that and then the radiologist injected the area several times with an anesthetic. I have to be honest with you here--it was painful. Even when he was doing the biopsy, the pain was duller but definitely still there. I held hands with 2 nurses and just squeezed.

    All I can say is--it was over fairly quickly, he got a good biopsy and remember--everyone is different. Some gals go through it and hardly feel a thing. Think positive, and I wish you the very best.

    This made me curious so I just checked my last mammogram. It says there are numerous
    clips in the central deep biopsy bed as well as surgical clips in the axilla from axillary surgery. I remember from my surgical pathology report that there was a wire, but not a titanium clip. And I had a big hunk of breast tissue removed. . .

    The titanium marker placed
    The titanium marker placed in me during the core biopsy was removed with my tumor. I wonder if clips are the same thing or something different?
