Husband just diagnosed with esophageal cancer but don't know stage yet

in Esophageal Cancer #1
Hubby has been having trouble with solid food getting stuck in esophagus - went to doc and had barium xray, ct scan, biopsy, etc. So far diagnosis is adenocarcinoma, but the gastro doc did not know the stage. They are sending him to U of M hospital in Ann Arbor, MI but don't know when yet. Why wouldn't the doc know the stage of this cancer? Is two weeks too long to wait to go to UofM? What are the likely next steps?

    Sorry, we have to welcome you to this site. Others with more knowledge will be posting soon. The Holiday may affect when they get back to posting.

    The staging is the key to treatment and the outcomes. There is a special staging scan that will give you the information.

    I know very little about U of M or which U of M you are referencing. It is very important that you do go to a major cancer center which has a treatment team where care is co-ordinated and expedited. Many universities and large hospitals have such ranked cancer centers and due to the difficulty an EC diagnosis presents, you want the most knowledgeable of and experienced with EC specialists looking after your husband.

    When are you going to find out when you go to U of M. Two weeks isn't too bad; however, you need to know when you are going and what they are going to do.

    Please check back with staging and the plan of treatment and where being treated. This will help the other discussion group members give you suggestions. I have found this group to be interested, helpful, knowledgeable, and accurate. What they have to say comes from some rough and trying experiences.

    The treatment is rough but doable as is the surgery. Your hope is that your husband can have the surgery. So, please let us know what is happening as soon as you learn. BMGky

    Sorry that your husband has this diagnosis but I do want you to know that there is a surgeon at U of Michigan Ann Arbor that has a fantastic reputation should he need surgery. Please keep us posted and ask away.
