reirradiation

Well Mom had her first reirradiation yesterday. She started vomiting this morning. She did not have any vomiting last year when she first went through radiation. But, of course this is the 2nd time and she's getting a stronger dose as they're trying to stop/slow down growth of tumor. She really didn't have a recurrence. Most of the doctors from MD Anderson and University of Michigan feel it wasn't treated properly the first time at MUSC in Charleston. They say recurrence, but once they start talking I can easily read between the lines.

Have any of you gotten had vomiting from radiation? What did you do? Please pray for my mother as we try to go through this treatment.

We have talked with a cranial surgeon in Colorado who would like to do surgery, but at the age of 84 I'm not sure that's the wisest course. We're at the Universty Of Michigan Health System now for radiation. They felt the tumor was too large for surgery.

    Hi Tesa
When I did my second radiation treatment I don’t remember getting sick or vomiting any. Is she taking Chemo as well as that will make you sick? I am so sorry to hear that your Mom was mistreated for her cancer as I believe that was my problems as well, doctors just did not know how to treat NPC cancer. Also remember at 84 your Mother has already lived longer then about 85% of the people here will ever see. My Wife mother will be 85 this month what a joy and pleasure it is to still have them with us after so many years.

    Keeping you both in prayer

    Tesa,

Your mother has God leading the way. She would not have survived through the first round of treatment if he wasn't. I know your mother is a woman of faith and that her church is bathing her in prayer. My prayers are with you both. I pray your mother's nausea subsides and that God continues to strengthen and heal her.

Keep strong. Keep the faith. God bless you both.

    Hi Tesa
I'm really sorry about what you and your mom are going through. I know the feeling, trust me. I have one question, why she is getting another radiation so fast? I didn't know you can get second radiation after only 1 year? how is that possible? Praying for both of you.

    Hi Tesa

Hope she does a lot better today also let her doctors know about the problems she is having, they can give her something to help with the nausea.

    2nd time
Tesa, I just finished radiation for the second time in a year. The radiologist did have to calculate carefully to not radiate where I got zapped last year. The first week was horrible because we were trying to use Amifostine (to protect salivary function). My body could not take it again. (I was able to take it 4 weeks last year). So sorry for what your mom is having to go through. Talk to the doctors. She is so blessed to have you for a daughter.

    Nausea from rads
Tesa sorry to hear about your mom. I started vomiting about half way through my rad treatment, not everyday, but every seven or eight days I would get a horrible migraine and nausea. Doc had me on prochlorperazine daily and also zofran, if the prochloro didn't cut it.

    Mom did better yesterday and
Mom did better yesterday and today.the doctor gave her some medicine to use as needed.
The minimum time for reirradiation is at least a year , that's why she's able to have it again. She finished in August of last year so she just made that cutoff. However, only part of the area was radiated last year, the other half never was.
It's so confusing because her treatment last year was totally done wrong. She didn't have complete surgery to remove the tumor, even though the doctor said he got it all. As a result the cancer continued to grow. They never did an MRI last year, only a CT scan, something MD Anderson doctors felt was very strange . The radiation wasn't done well either.
This has come from every other doctor we've talked to, albeit in a subtle way.

So we are trusting in God to take us through this. We have a lot of people praying for us and we're steadily studying God's word.
Being able to talk about this with others on here has gotten me through this thus far. I love my mother so much and it has been comforting to come on here and share with others who totally understand and give such great advice.
