Hi All....

Having my first PET Scan this coming Tuesday morning. I was told not to eat any sugar, caffiene or carbs 24 hours before the test and nothing at all 6 hours before. Easy enough....but does no carbs include veggies???? The only carbs that convert to sugar is starch right??? I dont want to eat the wrong thing and have the scan be messed up.

Advice?????

Thanks,

Susan

    carbs
I would think it would be okay to eat green veggies but no potatoes or rice or
pasta. Good luck on your scan!

    Veggies
I have instructions from my naturopath on how to prepare for a PET scan. The instructions say that low glycemic veggies are okay the day before the scan. You can look up the glycemic index of foods on various websites. Hoping for great scan results.

    Susan:

A Pet scan is one of the easier tests. There are two kinds a PET/CT or just a PET. With a PET/CT they will make you drink a crystal light type of drink (not like a CT Barium stuff) and then they will give you a shot of a radiactive isotope (radiactive sugar substance). You will then have to rest for about 45 minutes. They don't want you to move because your muscles will produce activity. Since cancer is drawn to sugar, any active cancer will "light up". Just note that the lungs and heart light up because it is moving. That is why that don't want you to move. I wasn't even allowed to read for my first one because I was getting a full body scan and reading will cause your eye muscles.

Also, don't do strenuous activity the night before. (like going to the gym) Just normal stuff.

My best to you on your scan!
