    HAI pump?
Thanks everyone for the wonderful advice! It sounds like many of you have gone to MSK and have done really well. That is so great to hear. Our surgeon at Duke actually trained at MSK. I still am trying to explore the possibility of checking it out just don't know if it is possible. We have a 14 year old still at home and can't exactly leave her and don't have family close by. So we will see. Our insurance coverage is not good for out of network and I am guessing the liver surgery will be over $100,000 maybe more. Can someone tell me more about the HAI pump? What is that for? Thanks as always for your wonderful support. Hugs to everyone!

The pump is implanted under your skin and it delivers chemo directly to your liver. I had that plus systemic chemo and it did the trick.
I have a photo posted of it. It was only giving chemo for 6 months after surgery. I still have it in there since once it's taken out it can't be put back in. I have to get it filled with an inert fluid every two months or so. It gave me no problems at all, I'm glad I had it gone.

    Thanks Phil
Thanks, that's what I thought it was but never knew how it worked. I asked our oncologist about chemo delivered directly to the liver and she said she didn't do that but it sure makes sense to me. So I guess we would have to find another oncologist. How often did you get chemo that way? My husband gets his 6th treatment of FOLFOX this coming up week. The told us that he was responding well to the chemo so far. The largest liver lesion has shrunk by 40% and the others are stable. They also said that some of them may be cysts so who knows until surgery. Thanks for all your wonderful advise! Hope you continue to well. Take good care of yourself! Teri

My husbands plan is RF on
My husbands plan is RF on left side of liver (last week), resection of rectum (temp iliostomy) this morning. The next is another cycle of chemo, recover from that then to block off right lobe of liver so left lobe can get bigger and stronger so they can remove right lobe.
I don't know that there is any usual order but if you are feeling unsure get some more opinions until you feel good about your plan.
God bless you, and I will askhim to send you some peace.

What I was told by my oncologists
I was told there is a short window on liver surgery, especially if in both lobes and close to the large blood vessel, as far as effectiveness, so I wouldn't want to wait too long on having that part of the surgery.

And if they are wanting to do surgery on your liver they obviously think there is a degree of effectiveness possible.

hi am very new here...not sure how to ask question. this is to phillieg..where did you go for treatment? we are going to talk to the oncologist on monday and am hoping she can think outside the box or statistics..dad is 69 and in relatively good health..found a large mass on lower and small one on top of the same lung while having a routine x-ray for something unrelated..think there are a few spots in liver (after seeing the catscan and pet report) was surgery ever given as an option in the beginnin? thanks for reading oh and p.s. how would i find a response to this question?

He had RFA on October 4th
He had RFA on October 4th (not sure if that is considered surgery of just a procedure)and rectum resection October 13th. The reason they did the RFA first was because he had a tumor very close to the Hepactic Vein and they wanted to make sure they could get it without compromising the function of that vein (it was the only tumor on the left lobe of his liver). Everything was kind of stemming off that procedure weather we would be able to move forward with the plan (to have chemo after resection, clot off right side of liver which had 3 tumors, let the left side "grow" and then remove total right side of liver). All went well with RFA so we went forward with rectum resection one week later. We just got home tonight and he is doing very well. There are so many things that have to happen, at any point something can't be done we have to re-plan everything. Thank you for your prayers, I'm sending up some for you too.
    God's blessings.
