I called this morning and the scheduler said to come in if nothing else for peace of mind. She got us in tomorrow morning! We have the best doctors ever.

Debbie

Jim has a large lump under his tongue. It is not sore but it has been there two days. He also has some edema under his chin which he hasn't had since right after treatment for about a week. He seems to be sleeping all the time again. Should I call the ENT about this or has others had this and it is not a problem? Any thoughts would help.

    Call and...
I'd call and schedule an appointment for the lump, if nothing else for peace of mind.

As for the edema, it could be the beginnings of the "Turkey Neck" most have had after radiation (if he had radiation) and which usually lasts for nearly 9 - 12 months post rads. Usually starting 1- 3 months after rads have finished.

    Best,
    John

The last thing my Radiation Oncologist said to me was, "for the rest of your life, error on the side of paranoia. You have cancer, it may save your life."

Please believe my oncologist and call.

    Hi Jim and I
my mom's lump on the side of her tongue turned out to be cancer(that was 2 months after 1ast treatment for tonsil cancer) after doctor ignored it for 4 months saying it is a side effect from radiation, better be safe then sorry, keep us posted, praying that it will turn out to be nothing. My mom also had lymphodemia which started approx. 2 months post treatment and lasted for about 3 months, it had gotten better.

    CALL CALL AND CALL AGAIN
I just went through this. I noticed some swollen tissue on the back of my mouth / gum area on the same side as my tonsillectomy. Long story short, it turned out to be just a chronic yeast infection. had it been the real deal, we would have caught it soon.

It is very natural to want to look to the group for an answer, as I did the same exact thing. Just skip it and see your ENT.

Sorry for being kind of "to the point" but that is too important to think about "do I or don't I call me doc."

    to the point
Thanks for being to the point sometimes we need to hear it. Went to ENT this morning. He is going to watch it. Not sure why or what it is. Could be lyphadema? Also sending us to a therapist to learn how I can massage his lyph for drainage. Jim doesn't seem concerned but I am.

    don't watch it too long
Jim and I, if that bump does not go away in a month pleeeeaseee do not ignor it and demand the biopsy. when something showed up on my mom's side of her tongue (only 2 months post radiation treatment) doctor's for almost 5 months kept saying that it is a side effect from radiation or an infection and now finally after doing biopsy after 5 months it came back posiive for cancer. I can't forgive my self for not demanding the biopsy sooner, but who should be smarter here me or the doctor's??? so who is really to blame? not sure but you know your husband well I'm sure and if you feel that something is not right please do something about it.

    will be proactive
    Joanna,

I will insist on a biopsy if it is still there in one month. Don't blame anyone. We have to trust the specialist and they make mistakes, we are all human. Keep up the positive attitude and I will keeping you and mother in prayer.
