Winter Marie,
Even though Harper is not one of my favorite people, perhaps I can point you in the right direction. The party website, www.conservative.ca/leader/ has quite a bit of information.
Judy
He doesn't seem to be a lot of people's favorite, so I'm surprised he was elected, that is why I choose him to do my paper on.
Thank you for your help.

Hi: I can add to that. He was born in Toronto (but doesn't seem to admit it!) but spent most of his life in Alberta (Calgary). He has degrees in Economics. He is a very bright man but can be hard, ruling perhaps with an iron fist. He is definitely pro-business/industry (like oil!) and not the environment. Not my favourite either (I liked Jack Layton who just died from cancer and was the leader of the NDP party). I'm sure if you checked online you'll find lots of non-newspaper sources (although the Globe and Mail did a very good article on him a few years ago - not favourable!). You'll get the party line on the conservative party website. However, one thing in his favour - we did survive the recession very well. It is interesting that he and his party did very well on the elections, but note that the NDP became the official opposition which is interesting in itself!
Keep us posted on your paper.
Happy thanksgiving from Canada.

Wikipedia
The wikipedia entry on Harper is pretty good for straight bio info.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephen_Harper
Once described as George W. Bush without the warm personality!
He wants y'all to buy more of our dirty tar sands oil.
Hope this helps.

If these sites don't pass muster you may actually have to go to a library! How archaic!

Hi Winter Marie: There was an interesting article in today's Globe and Mail (Canada's national newspaper along with the National Post if it is still going). The headlines urged McGuinty (a liberal who just won a minority vote in Ontario's elections) to adopt Harper's governmental strategy - "elect a strong, stable, majority government".
I know you can't use newspapers but I'm sure you'll be able to find that statement on other sources as it was his election stand.
We can't under-estimate Harper's intelligence. He is definitely not warm and fuzzy although he tries to be (not successfully) but he is very intelligent. An interesting focus might be the difference in "style" between him and Pierre Elliot Trudeau (a liberal) who really was full of charm (albeit he did some rather nasty things). He was known throughout the world for it - dated Barbra Streisand for example. Quite a different prime minister indeed! Different party, different personality.
Have fun with it!
PS: I didn't let my students use Wikipedia either! not only can you not guarantee the veracity of the articles but they are also gender biased. For some reason, women don't contribute very much to it at all.

Try this:
Wiki References for Stephen Harper
Rather than using Wiki as a source, you use the references to get at the original source documents. You can also use the further reading and additional links that are provided after the references.
This way, for the purpose of the paper, Wikipedia was never used as a source document.

That certainly is what I do! It makes a good start to a paper or lecture prep. On my computer hooked up to the university I also have direct connection to journals from which I can download articles for free. I'd be interested in seeing your paper Winter Marie! A view from outside, wow!

Hi: I'm not sure how to do that without it being erased. Can we do it through the CSN Email system? I know I'm hooked up to that. Would love to read it! You get great marks!

LOL Mags, I'll find out Monday what grade I received on it. On our Britain government paper I received a 19 out of 20 because when I spelled "party" wrong. I had left the "y" off and spelled "Part", he's a bit tough that way.
Their only a page and a half papers, but one on different governments due each week, showing we have some sort of opinion and knowledge of some part of each government. This week is Mexico. And each one counts heavily in his course work. I was absent one class from this guy's class and I had to get a note from the doctor to take in, made me feel like a little kid. Other teachers, like my other political science teacher tells people to make sure they come in on test days, so for her class you have to show up the first day, 3 different test days, one of which is the last day. I attend every class (except that one day I wasn't feeling well)as I enjoy going and taking the classes, even math, as much as it worries me.
It's fun really, especially at my age, I don't have to worry about all the younger year angst.

I'm not sure anyone in Canada likes the PM. He'll fight for the health care system if he gets sick though! He'd better!
