New plan for Dad

Dad saw the oncologist today and this was a little more positive. His doctor has talked with another droctor in the practice and they developed a plan. Dad will start carbo/taxol this Friday. He will have 3 rounds and then off a week. They will do 3 cycles tnat then another CT. The doctors are pretty sure this will control the cancer and shrink the tumor. He also hopes that it may stop the cancer growth all together.

Thank you all for all of the advice. Mom and I feel like there might be a little more hope then we had before.

Prayer and hugs to all,

Kathy

    Great News
Hopefully the treatment will be successful.

I had Cisplatin, Taxotere and 5FU for nine weeks, also three week cycles. The tumor I had dissolved away and never returned. Eventually doing another seven weeks of Carboplatin. But the tumor had dissolved away during that first nine weeks.

Hoping his will do the same.

    None
I was very fortunate, I didn't have anything of real concern. I became slightly de-hydrated once, but we caught it before it got out of control.

Anything that I got was just temporary...loss of taste, loss of hair...very minimal nausea with meds.

On mine I had the Emend the first three days of each cycle, and Zofran or similar for days after where I might feel a little under.

The tumor which had popped up a few weeks before actually seeing my ENT was visible before treatment. For me as it was close to the carotid artery, the hopes would be the chemo would either shrink or dissolve it. If it at least would shrink, any surgery would be less invasive.

For me just after the first cycle, my throat and face became swollen. I thought I was having some reaction to the chemo...the Chemo MD prescribed Levaquin and it went away.

After the second cycle around week five - six, the tumor was barely felt and not seen.

After round three you couldn't even feel it any longer.

Before starting the seven weeks of concurrent Carboplatin and daily rads, they did a CT and the tumor was gone.

I know this is not common (I presume) and not something that I thought would happen, but it did.

My thoughts and prayers that it will be similar with your father.

    Thoughts & Prayers,
    John
