    Hitting the juice
Hi Tesa, I juice on and off, and I think it's a great way to increase your intake of veggies and fruit. I use a JackLalane super juicer, and recently did a four-day juice fast with mainly kale as the base, but also celery, carrot, and apples. I was aiming for seven days, but only make it to four before calling it quits.

I don't know what stage of recovery your mom is at. Juicing is good for anybody, anytime, but I'd have to say if she's in treatment or within the first months of recovery, I don't know how much it would speed her healing. That takes time more than anything else. If you've looked on the net, you know juicing is a sub culture too. Some people just make smoothies, and go green. I'm not in that group, but I do think juicing regularly is a health benefit.

best to you and your mom,

    Hal

    Tesa, juicing is great
Tesa, juicing is great source of vitamins and enzymes (cooking kills most of the enzymes) but if your mom is still in treatment check with her doctor. Jim's doctorsaid it was ok as long as the produce was organic and washed well. Others have told me that their doctor said no because of the chance of getting bacteria and immune being low. So I erred on the side of caution and did not juice until he was through with treatment.

    Blessings

    Thanks for clarifying me
Thanks for your info Debbie. I didn't juice when I was in recovery, because nothing tasted good and I used the peg, but didn't know about the bacteria possibility. I ate anything I could tolerate once I was able to eat, like everyone else.

    best, Hal

Good For You and Tastes Good, Too
    Tesa,
Like Hal, I've juiced off and on (mostly off). I juiced after diagnosis, until docs told me to avoid fresh fruits and veggies while doing chemo. Then I did a little bit here and there. Funny you posted today - I got back from the store this evening with my supplies for the coming week. Now, I do carrot/beet juice and cabbage juice. Small amount (ounce) of beet juice in the carrot juice to start - beet is very cleansing, and can be rough on folks in large doses. What I do now is juice the beet and carrot together and set aside (with my glass of water). Then I juice my cabbage, and chug it down as soon as it's done (I've read that you should drink cabbage juice within a minute of juicing it). The cabbage is intense, so I take a gulp of water, then drink the carrot/beet juice, which is sweet (especially following cabbage). In the past, I've done cabbage, cucumber (nice), broccoli (harsh), and apple juicing (I'd add apple to all veggies except cabbage). Now, the beet/carrot takes care of the sweet. I'd like to do more juicing, but it is a bother sometimes. I have a Breville Juice Fountain. Wish you could rent kitchen small appliances - then you could sample juicer/emulsifiers to see what you like. I do feel like it does me good when I'm in juicing mode - dunno if it is actually doing good, or if I feel better because I feel good about what I'm doing - it is a handy way to get in more servings of fruit/veg.

    I did not juice during
I did not juice during treatment either. That's one thing about juicing and eating fresh fruit and veg. You must thoroughly wash and scrub to get rid of anything that could be a potential food safety issue. I also never buy cut up fruit like melons or whatever, because I don't know if it was handled or washed properly.

I have only been juicing and doing smoothies a couple times a week now because I've been eating better. I usually use a fresh banana and some frozen fruit for smoothies. I rotate between strawberries, blueberries, cherries and peaches. Juicing, I use a lot of veg and some fruit.

You can also look on the superthread for juicing info and recipes to try, if you're interested.

    Hi Tesa
My wife juices for me but mostly carrots with a green apple, she has it waiting for me when I get home from work. That is about all the juicing I do.
