Funny, I was going through treatment at the time, and my Chemo MD recommended that I didn't get the H1N1 because of possible side effects from the one given back several years ago.
The regular flu shot she did recommend....
So I got the regular and not the H1N1...
I just saw on Dr. Oz the other day where he got his flu shot and was reminding everyone to get theirs...
I think CVS or someone was promoting them.

Flu Shot
Saw the same segment with Dr. Oz but can't remember if he recommended the pneumonia shot? What do you think? Should we also get those as well or just stick to the flu shot? My PCP has said yes I should get the flu shot but let the decision of a pneumonia shot up to me.

You learn somrthing new everyday. I was not even aware it existed. A quick google search makes it seem like a no brainer. reasons to get it include: over 65, weak immune system, diabetic, active cancer or chemo, HIV, smokers, and it's a one time shot. My only question now is cost?
It's about 20 minutes later. My GP called the house on an unrelated matter and I asked him if I should get the shot? His answer was, "You haven't had it yet?" I scheduled to get it. around $80. He said once every five years until age 62, then your good to go.0 -

LOL, I think it depends on who you ask also....
I forgot to add in my above posting. My Chemo MD was against H1N1, my Rads MD was for HiN1, my GP was up for it, and my ENT was non-committal....LOL

That's what I thought too about the reasons for getting it. Will probably add it into my wellness program for this fall.
Usually get the flu shot in October that way I don't have to worry about not being covered in March when the flu runs rampant.

My hubby and I got flu shots today. Anyone with cancer ever had a reaction? He's running a fever of 101, says his stomach or really low gut just ache, all his joints ache, etc. I am assuming it is just a reaction to the shot, but what do I know, really.

I used to give flu shots for Public Health when I worked in the community (I work in a hospital now, on leave during treatment).
The most serious side effect is an anaphylactic reaction to the shot that occurs within 1/2h, that is why a clinic may make you wait for 1/2h after your shot. People allergic to eggs or any of the preservatives in the shot should not get it, although it is very rare to be allergic to the preservatives, eggs is the main one. Symptoms include immediately getting flushed, shortness of breath, itching, fast heart rate, drop in blood pressure. In general, an anaphylactic reaction is like getting hit by lightning, odds are very low.
More common flu shot reactions can occur and last a couple of days, the symptoms are caused by the immune system's antibody reaction to the inactive virus. That said, most people do not have symptoms at all but some do. The most common reaction is tenderness at the injection site and this is relieved with Tylenol. The symptoms you describe can occur but I would see a doctor if they last more than a few days, especially if the fever continues or goes up.
About 1 in 20 people may have cough, sore throat, hoarseness or red eyes, sometimes called 'oculo-respiratory syndrome'.
The inactive viruses in the shot cannot give people the flu or a cold. Sometimes people have sworn it has made them sick and the syndrome noted above or coincidentally contracting a cold at the same time is a likely cause. Real flu symptoms are very debilitating and are unlike common cold symptoms.
The flu shot takes at least 14 days to work and requires an immune response to be effective.
The flu shot usually contains 3 of the most common strains from the previous year, so we are still susceptible to new strains.
Since I haven't worked in Public Health for a few years, I am not up-to-date regarding women in the early stages of pregnancy and those who have a neurological condition such as MS and/or history of Guillian-Barre, the only other possible contraindications against getting the shot.

Like Roger mentioned, back in the day when live virus flu shots were given, it was a common complaint of flu like symptoms after a flu shot.
These days, live virus shots aren't given, so basically those symptoms should not appear.
Of course in some, I suppose there is always a factor of the placebo effect, just from past experiences.
In your case Olybee, if in doubt it never hurts to see/speak to one of your MD's.

I got the flu, pnumonia, and a tetanus yesterdy. I did ask my primary doc about shingles shot, but it didn't seem like somthing to get as a matter of course. It had to be prescribed at her office, rx taken to a nearby clinic to be filled, then I would have to take it back to her office to be given. Also, it is out of pocket. Like Amifostene, it has a short half life, and has to be taken in a short amount of time. So I'm set, gonna run out and step on a nail, because I can . . .

I remember those days Hal....
Like you said, they actually mixed up the powder/solution each day just before the injection.
It depended on the nurse on just what they mixed it with. Some used saline, others used some other liquid solution with it.

This is the first time I hear of a Pneumonia Shot, when I was at MD Anderson last month the PET scan showed that the lungs had aspiration in them which the Doctor said could become Pneumonia I wonder why he did not give me the Pneumonia Shot. I will see my ENT today and sak her about it.
