First chemo after surgery

It has been over 3 weeks since my surgery, and the chemo assay is still not in. I don't know why it is taking so long! Anyway, my doctor ordered the first cycle of chemo, and then we will change accordingly when the results do come in. I fly to CA tomorrow to do cisplatin and navelbine on Monday AM. Did the labs yesterday, at the local hospital and everything is a GO!

I did have the cisplatin about 3 years ago, and had extreme nausea, and throwing up. I told myself then, I would never take it again. Well, time and the desire to stay alive, tends to change things.

The good news is that I feel terrific, and have been enjoying down time with family here in Seattle. The weather has been perfect, and that is a nice bonus too.

    Maybe you are someone who needs the anti-nausea drug pre-emptively? Oh you are a brave one, my dear. I hope for the BEST possible outcome for you!

    with your treatment. Where are you having the chemo? I live in California. I had Cisplatin and I was given medication before during and after each infusion. My nausea was minimal. I called it feeling icky. I had taxol and Cisplatin on consecutive days so I am not sure which one knocked me on my butt or maybe it was just having chemo two days in a row. Make sure to monitor your symptoms. I was neutropenic after the first cycle and my electolytes plummeted after the third cycle. I'm sorry I don't want to be a downer but just want you to be prepared. Of course you have been through all this longer than I have and I'm sure you know the signs.

    glad you are starting chemo again

    So nice to hear that you are feeling well and able to enjoy your family. I've been on cisplatin/gemzar for months since I could no longer tolerate carboplatin. I don't love it either, but get lots of pre-med steroids and anti-nausea drips. Yup, it's amazing what we'll put up with to enjoy those happy times.

    Carolen,
    I tried every combination of anti-nause in the pre, mid, and post IV that was possible, and nothing worked. I'm hoping that my body is in better shape (last time, I got an infection after surgery etc, and was weak, going into the chemo treatment) and I can tolerate more. We will see.

    Karen,
    my hospital is in Burbank and doc is close by. I will go to his clinic for chemo. If I need IV fluids, I guess they can hook my right up in my hotel room. Go figure. America is amazing.

    Maria,
    are you still on the cis/gem? How many months has it been? You are a tough cookie. Is there one ant-nausea that works better than the rest, or do you just get them all?

    Two tough cookies :)
    I've been on gemzar since last Sept. and was switched from carboplatin to cisplatin last Jan. The standard anti-nausea pre-med gives me a headache, so I think they are giving me (aloxy?) as a drip pre-med along with my steroid. I take one capsule of indomethacin, twice daily for the two days before my gem/cis infusion and 5 tablets of the steroid dexamethason the night before. I don't have intense nausea after infusion. I couldn't be happier that you are doing so well!!!!
