I am seeing my docs next month but in the meantime wondered if any of you knew what these letters and numbers mean?
My diagnosis was cT4aN2bM0 (Stage IVa) Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the left base of tongue.
Thanks in advance
Peace, Nancy aka toughcookie

    The TNM staging system
    the little 'c' is not part of the system.

    T indicates the size of the tumor
    N describes the extent of spread
    M indicates spread to other organs
    0-4 indicate severity
    X means cannot be assessed

    cT4aN2bM0

    T4= tumor invades nearby structures, bone, skin, sinuses, or larynx, neck, or deep muscle of the tongue

    a = I don't know, it seems out of place???

    N2b= the cancer has spread to multiple lymph nodes on the same side as the primary but none bigger than 6 cm across

    MO = no distant spread

    Stage IVA , one of the following applies: The tumor is any size but has not spread to nearby structures. It has either not spread to the lymph nodes or has spread to one lymph node, on the same side which is smaller than 3cm across. The cancer hasn't spread to distant sites or:

    The tumor is any size and may not invade nearby structures. it has spread to one of the following:

    one node on the samre side between 3-6 cm
    one node opposite less than 6cm
    multiple nodes, either side, smaller than 6cm
    no distant spread.

    H&N Staging
    Very good Splinter.....

    Nancy, here is a site that details out pretty much the same info that RatFace posted above;

    H&N Cancer Staging

    T4a = STG IVa

    N2b = Metastasis in multiple ipsilateral (same side) lymph nodes, none more than 6 cm in greatest dimension.

    MO = No evidence of distant metastasis.

    Not much to add, RatFace has pretty much covered it all.

    Best,
    John
