I just learned that September is Gynecologic Cancer Awareness month. I haven't seen anything on TV, haven't seen everyone and his/her brother wearing teal or peach ribbons, haven't heard nor seen a peep about it. I was at the market this afternoon and there was that stupid wine display with the pink ribbon, tho!

I am very supportive of breast cancer events. I'm a breast cancer survivor. The breast cancer peeps have their act together.

Has anyone seen anything relative to Gynecologic Cancer Awareness month?

    I'm on Facebook and 'Liked' The Foundation for Women's Cancers formerly The Gynecologic Cancer Foundation and get their updates regularly. Surprisingly, although Awareness month is Sept they are having Walk/Run along with all day programs the first weekend in November! It'll be in Wash DC so too far away for me. Also the Ovarian Cancer groups have taken teal as their color and consider Sept their month as well. The OV CA considerb their cancer to be the most deadly women's cancer and are becoming much better organized and have fundraising run events. Yes I guess we need to get more vocal. Teal is a stronger color and as the all gyn cancers color we could use it as well. The peach is a harder color to make a statement with but I wonder if a teal and peach combo would work?

    2005 September is when it all began with me. I had my hysterectomy then and found out after it was removed that I had cancer. The rest is what it is. I knew something was wrong and no one thought it was cancer. The doctors were shocked afterwards. They just thought it was severe endometriosis.

    Saw some evidence today
    Just attended a workshop for my peer navigator training at my Cancer Center and there was a street sign announcing street closure today between 5:30 and 6:30 for an ovarian cancer run. No mention of it being Gyn Cancer Awareness month, tho. Go figure.

    I go to Cleveland
    I go to Cleveland Clinic(although it takes me 3 hours to get there) and the webpage says September is Gyn Cancer Awareness.

    Here is part of what was said:

    Every seven minutes, a woman in the United States is diagnosed with a cancer of the reproductive organs, including cancer of the ovary, uterus, vagina, vulva, cervix, and fallopian tubes. More than 82,000 women of all ages and backgrounds were diagnosed last year. Prevention and early detection are crucial to a woman's health.

    Also, don't forget that part of the statement for these types of cancers is that "it whispers".

    Teal for Ovarian cancer
    When I was told I have ovarian cancer my doctor told me teal was the color for ovarian cancer. I did not know that there was any other color than pink for breast cancer. I do believe that Ovarian cancer is one of the most deadly because by the time you realize something is wrong you are usally stage three of four. I am stage four the signs of ovarian cancer can be explained away it is not until things really get bad and you go in to see what is wrong that you find out about the signs of ovarian cancer. I was sick for three months and had gone to urgent care four times and my doctor once when finally I said screw it I am going to the er. When I got there they did a cat scan of my lungs and caught just enough of my stomach to see the tumors. That is when the nightmare begain.

    I'm gonna switch to saying September is women's gynecologic cancer awareness month (what a mouthful!). I think teal and peach would look lovely together.

    Kaleena, how often do you go to Cleveland Clinic? That is a long drive.

    I hated my hour and a half drive to Hopkins every three weeks for chemo. Then for my radiation, I spent weekdays at my daughter's in Baltimore.

    I now have a gyn onc close to home and both he and the one at Hopkins are sharing my surveillance. Next week I see the gyn onc near home and the radiation onc at Hopkins. Fun week (NOT!).

    Colors
    There are awareness colors for all cancers - and other causes. We only see pink! Teal is the awareness color for ovarian cancer but can be an umbrella for all gyn cancers, including uterine and cervix which are peach (uterine) and teal and white (cervical).

    What a lovely site. I have a feeling for the lavendar, which represents all cancers. It feels right for me, just felt a pull on my heart from it for all those with cancers.

    I am now on a 6 mo check-ups, unless I need scans, etc. I try to have everything done in one day, but sometimes it doesn't happen. But it is worth every minute for me to go there.

    My only problem now is that I changed insurance companies and now I am screwed for the meantime. My new insurance company won't take Cleveland as in network (even though I was promised that they would be). I saw my doctor in June and was due for a PET Scan and port removed. Well I couldn't have my port removed at Cleveland (finally got it out after 5 1/2 years) and they are denying PET Scan as "not medically necessary". I have been fighting ever since to get this done. They will now accept me getting a CT Scan but only at my local hospital. I said given my case history a PET Scan would be better for me. I am waiting for my response. My last PET Scan was in November.

    My best to you on your upcoming appointments. At least you will get them done in one week!

    All those colors reminds me of a rainbow and a rainbow is hope and a promise
    that all will be well.
