Buzz's cancer is back. What to do?

Buzz's base of tongue cancer has spread to his left neck only 9 months after the end of treatment. We suspected this for some time as the previous 2 scans showed activity in the right neck and tongue. The cancer is not curable but treatable. Our options are limited. The only chemo our oncologist can offer is more of the same. Buzz had two rounds of cisplatin, taxotere, and 5-Fu followed by Erbutux and radiation. No more radiation is possible. The chemo was brutal and Buzz was hospitalized twice last fall. We are hoping to find a clinical trial using less toxic drugs. Nothing is available in Albuquerque where we live. Does anyone know of a current clinical trial in Arizona, Texas or Colorado? We can travel and stay whereever he can get care. Also, any tips on getting him into a trial ASAP would be appreciated. I am willing to do whatever it takes to get this treatment started. BTW, he is having a lot of pain in his neck and it is noticeably swollen on the left side (and getting bigger). Scared to death, Karen

    trials
    Karen,

I am so sorry and I also know exactly how you feel. My husband's situation is quite similar.

I am in the process of searching for a clinical trial in case my husband's latest treatment is not effective. He was actually accepted into a trial and the day he was supposed to begin the trial was halted nationwide.

Anyhow, I would suggest you go to three different sites. You can enter his information yourself or talk to a representative by phone. I have done it both ways. After you supply his criteria, you will get a list of trials emailed to you. At that point, our oncologist has offered to help us weed through them.

    American Cancer Society
    Clinical Connection
    National Cancer Institute

They will ask for details about his diagnosis, his treatment, and can search by mileage from your zip code.

Trials range from Phase 1 to Phase 4 and it is explained in detail what that means on each site.

Please feel free to pm me or call me (334) 546-0200

    My sincere best wishes,
    Robin

I am so sorry.... I sure
I am so sorry.... I sure hope you all find some clinical trials. Looks like Robin has a good starting point for you.. Please get some rest, as a caretaker I know how this can zap ones energy. Sending hugs and prayers your way. Just a thought, look into the robotic surgery. I know my husbads ENT is the only doctor in Houston besides MD Anderson that can do it. We really like his ENT. By the way, his name is Dr. Ronald Karni at Memeorial Hermann downton medical center. Just in case you live near Houston. Again, I will be praying for a good outcome. We are still waiting for our biopsy results. Always a scary time...

So sorrry to hear about this news.

The FDA requires all clinical trials to be posted on www.clinicaltrials.gov Lots of clinical trials and easy to navigate. You can sort by location/disease and status of the clinical trial.

Thoughts and prayers are with you!!

    Karen,
    I am facing same

    Karen,
I am facing same situation with my mother. Her cancer "returned" only 3 months after treatment.
Have you contacted Sloan Kettering? They are spoken very highly of, and I know they treated Michael Douglass' stage 4 cancer. Also MD Anderson may have some clinical trials available.
I will be praying for you both. Don't give up.

    Clinical trails
Thanks for the response and support where everyone knows what it is like to deal with cancer. I went to clinicaltrials.gov and found 3 places to go: Houston (MD Anderson), Denver (University of Colorado), and Phoenix (Mayo Clinic). Denver seems to have the most studies going on. Phoenix would be our first pick because we have family there. Buzz was also seen at Mayo's in Phoenix last year. The mass in his neck has grown in the past few days. Pretty scary stuff. Karen

My husband was treated by Antonio Jimeno and Changhu Chen at University of Colorado Hospital in Colorado. Both of those doctors, as well as Dr. Song, the ENT, are very involved in clinical trials and in research for HNC. I cannot recommend them highly enough. Please read our story on the University of Colorado Cancer Center blog, and please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. UCH is great.

Karen, I am very sorry to
Karen, I am very sorry to here this bad news. It is just not fair when a person goes through treatment and then finds out they have to start over. I pray God will give you and Buzz the strength to get through this. Connie lymph nodes were swelling out of control also and I was trying to get her into treatment but it can be a helpless feeling. I really don't have any words that could comfort you except to say I will keep you both in my prayers, Homer & Connie

Very sorry to read your scary news. I'm asking that you all get paired up with a new medical team quickly. Is the spread a lymph node, or something else? I know his nodes are gone on the right side. By "treatable", are they recommending chemo to beat it down, followed by surgery? Hoping for positive news.

    Hi Karen
Sorry to hear the beast is back but don’t give up, as you know I have seen this monster three times and with God’s help beat it all three times. MY two favorite places are the Mayo Clinic in Phoenix and MD Anderson in Houston. Call and ask them about their clinical trials and about being radiated twice, I was radiated twice to the same area because of something to do with my bone mass in my face, maybe they can check Buzz for this.

Wishing you well and keeping you both in my prayers.

    Yes, sorry-
to hear of this. If more surgery is not an option, I hope and Pray Buzz can get into a trial at one of the forementioned centers. The both of you are in my Prayers.

    clinical trials
Would still recommend checking several search sites because I did find many different ones on each site. It was very interesting that I got so many different results when they probably should be all listed in one search. I am working on narrowing them down but, my oncologist is very willing to help me because it is a daunting task.

Of course, if you visit a certain cancer center, remember that they are recruiting for their trials. An objective source is important.

I hope that your research leads you to what is best. I am in that same position, so I know how time consuming it is. Besides, we are still trying to care for our husbands while leading their way to the best treatment options.

    Best wishes,
    Robinleigh
